According to an article in the Wall Street Journal, digital media advertisement revenue will surpass television advertisement spending faster than expected this year. This shift emphasizes the growing importance of opportunities online platforms have to offer. Platforms such as Twitter and Facebook play a major role in influencing consumer tastes and establishing trends. Companies must be able to anticipate what the next big craze will be in order to attract the most consumers.

Traditional advertising consisted of placing ads on newspapers, the radio or television and waiting in the hope that the consumer will get engaged. Today, Facebook and Twitter offer a new opportunity where the consumer is already engaged and your advertisement is placed in the information stream. These platforms allow you to track what audiences view your adverts. Furthermore, since everything can be linked to each other on the cloud, the consumer has quick access to information about your product and even online purchasing. This changes the game for advertisers. Furthermore, these platforms provide for the widest reach and generate the most statistics for data mining. Data mining gives advertisers the new opportunity to track consumer behaviors and predict future trends. By studying consumers’ psychographics through Facebook and Twitter, the advertiser gets to know the consumers on a deeper level than it could have ever been possible through other advertising channels.

With the ever-growing internet penetration into homes and businesses, online platforms are becoming the single major channel for advertisers. They allow a company to maintain an important presence in the consumer’s daily life with regular feed updates. In addition, Twitter and Facebook offer new advertising opportunities that go past simply trying to get consumers to spend. They allow you to grasp your target audience’s attention for a longer time by making them familiar with the company itself. You can engage your consumer through campaigns before even mentioning sales.
