Second year student of BTS CPI, I first got my scientific Baccalaureate with honors. I did my first year internship in BTS within the company Zodiac Actuation Systems recently bought by Safran group. It is a company specializing in aeronautical equipment and systems on board commercial, regional and business aircraft as well as helicopters. Zodiac actuation systems site is an entity based in La Courneuve since 2015 and currently has 135 employees. In 2017, its turnover was 38 million euros. We note that this year has been pretty weak because of our main clientele which has also delivered a lot less. The target to be reached by 2020 is to return to a turnover of around 50 million euros. Zodiac Actuation Systems designs, manufactures and markets various products:

  • Technical actuators, motors and sensors for aeronautics and defense
  • Passenger seat actuation systems

The products incorporate skills in electromechanical, electronic, software and precision mechanics. They are present in different fields of application (civil and military aeronautics, marine, industry). At La Courneuve, the site is focused on seat actuators that allow the seat to change position.

I chose this company because my aunt works in this company and this facilitated my access to it and also because I like the field of aeronautics.

Before starting the project that was entrusted to me, I first received a presentation from the company. I had to adapt to the different habits of the company especially in terms of CAD software, I used Solidworks in school as design software, I had to learn to use a new design software, CATIA. To familiarize myself with the software I redesigned actuator parts from plans (reducer, motor, motor brake). The project that had been entrusted to me was to build a test bench, to obtain             measurements of the noise of our actuators. I had to respect functional specification: The test bench had to guarantee the measured noise level and not increase it. A load will be applied to the actuator, this load must be adjustable between 0 and 300 DaN. The actuator will have to travel 300 mm back and forth. A constraint that did not appear in the specifications but which was not to be overlooked, was that the test bench had to enter a deaf room and therefore the size of the test bench had to be taken into account. I developed differents solutions to realize a table with the advantages and the disadvantages in order to preserve the best solution. I made many calculations for the pre-dimensioning of my pieces with the software excel. Then I realized one by one the parts of my test bench on CATIA. Then I checked with software called ANSYS that the sizing of my parts did not pose a problem of resistance. I finished assembling each piece of my test bench on CATIA.

Even if my project will not be retained, I think that my work will allow the company to advance more easily in the development of their new test bench. I learned many things in the company that allowed me to see with what tools and how the technicians worked. All the people of the BE were very welcoming with me and always helped me in my project, that's why I keep a good memory and I think it’s a good experience.
