Question 1

So we all know what global warming is, but when does it started ?

Actually, the first scientist searching about the greenhouse effect was Jacques Fourier in 1824.

Many scientists are studying the phenomenon and try to understand how the activities of human societies cause this warming.

These scientists are grouped together in the IPCC, and they regularly publish reports studying the evolution of global warming.

Question 2

What is the IPCC ?

The IPCC is structured in three working groups (SLIDE)

They have published reports since 1990 and the latest were this year.

Question 3

How many pathways are predictable ?

The latest IPCC report presents five different socio-economic pathways (SSPs), each with a different rate of greenhouse gas emissions, but few of these scenarios seem to point to an optimistic future for the planet.

But Why ?

Question 4

What is the holocene ?

Question 5

How many planetary limits exist?

With the different studies regarding global warming, scientists have created the concept of the "planetary limit":

the idea that for more than 10,000 years, throughout the “Holocene”, the Earth has remained in a stable state, and that if certain limits were to be crossed, we could see a serious change in the state of the planetary ecosystem.

There are nine established global limits, four of which had already been crossed in 2015:

  • Climate change
  • Erosion of biodiversity
  • Global disruption of the nitrogen and phosphorus cycle
  • Land use change

In addition, in 2022 :

  • Introduction of new substances
  • The use of fresh water

This leaves only three limits, which may well be crossed before long:

  • Ocean acidification
  • Degradation of the ozone layer
  • Increase in aerosols in the atmosphere

Solving these environmental challenges will require profound changes in business policies and practices. However, your personal actions can also help. So I put here five habits you can adopt in your daily life to reduce your personal impact on the environment. Discover 5 ways in which you can limit your ecological footprint:

Choose a green energy : by choosing a 100% renewable energy supplier, you are contributing to a greener world while saving money on your electricity bills
