PLACES AND FORMS OF POWER

First, I would like to give a definition of power. It is the ability to control others and to make things happen despite obstacles, resistance, or opposition. This of course leads to conflict between those who have and exercise power and those who have none or little of it. As a consequence, the exercice of power within a community requires that its members accept a complex system of laws and respect symbols. This notion deals with geographical and symbolic areas and the interaction between men and different societies. Our world is built on the exploration and conquest of new spaces.

To illustrate this notion, I have chosen to focus on First People in Canada and try to answer the question what do borders mean to first People in Canada ? Firstly, we will talk about advantages and drawbacks of Canada and secondly we will look at the situation of the Inuit in Canada. How these people have been pressured ?

First of all, Canada is the second largest country in the world. Canada is a great place to live abroad for English and French People. The integration is easier because there is no language barrier. It’s a peaceful country which is relatively neutral with a good healthcareand education system.

The country is sparecely populated according to the climate. Most people of Canada live along the border because of a more temperate climate.

Moreover, the most important category of indigenous inhabitant of Canada are the First Nations and the Inuits.

It’s definitely not easy for First People to resist the attempts by the governments to exploit their land and ressources. They don’t understand why government established borders. They represent a minority so governments want to have an influence on them. They have to fight to defend their rights, their land.

The culture of Inuits is deeply rooted in the vast land they inhabit.

To illustrate the situation of the Inuit, I will present the document «Stop stealing our land »

For example, the Inuits fight The Canadian government who wants to have access to the gas and oil in the Arctic, the North-West passage.

Five countries want to have this access and don’t recognize the Inuits rights. The Inuits are been marginalized and have been fighting to stop the explotation of their land by super powers. These countries can’t divide their country only for economic reasons without take car of their roots. It’s just unfair.

To conclude, people from different cultures can nowadays live together in harmony thanks to a long and painful fight for equality leading

First people have begun to be recognized and its citizens are now listened to and respected.
