Myths and Heroes

I'm going to talk about the notion of Myths and Heroes. A myth might not be true. Its aim is to convey a message and it is a story told from a generation to another. A myth can by example explain the origins of a community and here, by example, we could speak about the Romulus and Remus myth for the foundation of Rome. Whereas a hero is somebody whom we admired for what he did. He is not necessary famous, it can be a member of our family or circle of friends. My father is for me an hero because I simply admire him for what he does and what he is. So we can consider them to be instructive and a sort of guide to social norms. They tell us how we should and should not behave.  How can myths and heroes change our lives ? I will talk on the first hand about the impact of heroes on our mind and on the other hand about the role of heroes in our societies.

1/ A hero is an example : Sam Burns and the way to happiness

Nowadays life is hard. It’s hard to find a work, it’s hard to have a family, it’s sometimes hard to survive. For this reason we need to have in our mind the idea of someone we admire from whom we should take example. The idea of a person who find a way to erase problems even if those are really serious.

This year we studied the case of Sampson Gordon also known as "Sam" Berns , an American teenager who had progeria, an extremely rare autosomal dominant genetic disorder in which symptoms resembling aspects of aging are manifested at a very early age. Persons affected by progeria typically live to their mid-teens to early twenties. Sam died at the age of 17. Nowadays he is considered an hero.

In the documentary “Life according to Sam”, he appeared in a TEDx Talks video entitled “My philosophy for a happy life”. His philosophy was based on the theory that we must be happy for what you have and what you are. According to him, life is so beautiful that we only need to live it and in this way he has taught us how to be happy. We don’t have to reach happiness but only thinking of life like the most important thing of the world. We have to be grateful for this present. The history of Sam must be from example. It encourages us not to complain us, to think that life is the most precious good. In this way, we could refer to Nietzsche with his Amor Fati philosophy which teaches us not to care about mistakes and past and to focus on the moment, on the present. Sam Berns is for me a hero because his philosophy of life, full of positivity, should be an example for all of us.

2/  The influence of heroes in our society

A myth or a hero can have a cultural influence. In this way we can talk about Steve Jobs who became recently a kind of hero and his famous business company Apple which became a real myth. Why did he become a hero ? Steve Jobs was a  person like the other ones : he had an ordinary life story but he turned out to be a genius. He knew and he overcame many difficulties. He was vulnerable like all of us. In fact, he left school, he has been fired and he suffered from health problems. Steve Jobs was an inventor: he has been actively involved in the progress of computing and mobile telephony. The American businessman was hard at work: he gave everything to promote his professional career, which is why he became a model of success. Currently, iPhones represent the biggest advance in mobile telephony and is known around the world. Steve Jobs is a modern hero for this reason and his Apple business has become a symbol, a myth.
