The power of money

Thank you very much, it’s a pleasure to be here in the United Nations Headquarters and most of all its my pleasure and my honor to welcome you all here.

So let me start this speech off by introducing myself, my name is Jack Napier and I’m here today as the CEO of the Fair Trade organization so as to present to you today about our issues of the power of money.

And if you’re sitting here at United Nations Headquarters today, its means you are seeking answer. You’re here on your own time because you care about our world, and you want to make sure I care about it as much as you do. Well, I’m not going to waste any of your time. My main focus for this speech is our issue with how much importance and power we give to money.

Equitable Globalization, that is one of the fundamental questions of today’s world. And it is also something we as a race, as a species, as humans should all thrive for.

But sadly that isn’t the case, and we can see it because of many different aspects shown everyday from simply our human nature to our creation. But for this speech, I will only focus on the aspect concerning money and the amount of power if holds.

When I was but a young child, I have always asked myself this question, why are some people suffering on the streets or in desolated areas, while others live without worries whilst ignoring the problems of the world. And I would always receive the same answers “it’s because they do not have enough money to sustain themselves, whilst the other has enough money to be able to”. Does this seem fair to you? Because, for me this seems like the exact opposite of what we are going for, and that is and equitable world. For me it seems as if those with enough money just seek more money with a mindset that says that if you’re good at something never do it for free. And those who do not have enough money are only searching for a better life.

I have learnt that in this economy money is what makes the world go around.  To have money, to have lots of it is not wrong and it never will be, but money is a tool either for good or for bad. How we use the money is what is of great importance here. It is always better to be rich rather than poor. The reason is simple; to have is better than to lack. We all want our daily needs met. It is human nature and there is nothing wrong with it.

And while it is better to be rich rather than poor, because with the power of money, we can rid ourselves of most of our worries in life so as to never fear starvation and such. But we must not forget that while we may be no longer suffering, there are still millions out there who are.

And that’s why organizations like mine exist, because we have noticed that for those who do not posses enough money, sometimes just a little help could greatly change their life for the better and that we also seek to help those who are in need of our help. And are we able to help them? Yes, we are! Even if our help is but a minuscule one, it may be just enough help needed to help them survive in this world easier.

But even though money possesses the power to changes one life, there are also as many things it cannot hope to achieve. And let me show my point with a few quotes: “money wont create success, the freedom to make it will” by nelson Mandela,  “don’t let making a living prevent you from making a life” by John Wooden, “a good reputation is more valuable than money” by Publilius Syrus. These phrases show that money is not the key to happiness but only a necessity to live easier, and as much joy money can bring to a person, I can also bring problems and stress since while being able to make a lot of money is great, being able to maintain it is something different.
