Places and Forms of power

« Places » could be important buildings or institutions that represent a certain form of power, for example Buckingham Palace. A place can also be a country or a state –  for example the USA is a state which is powerful enough to influence events throughout the world (superpower) and China is a major economic power in today’s world.

« Power » is the ability to control others, events, or resources; the ability to make things happen despite obstacles, resistance, or opposition. This of course leads to conflict between those who have power and those who don’t.

First of all, if we look at the power of the media for example we can see how much it can influence the public opinion.

Media can have a strong political influence or can shape the way we perceive certain groups of society – minority groups, pressure groups…mass media is powerful because it makes us believe what is acceptable and unacceptable behaviour (reality TV).

Media can deliver a message.

ex : dear world leader

The power can help to defend an idea , a fight. We can talk about special days like woman days which has a world wild dimension and purpose fighting for women’s equal rights.

Those fights are symbolic meanings, they have an important role in society.

The power of associations or movement against feminism can change the society.

Second of all, we said that places could be a country or a state.

The urbanisation of a place is controlled with laws, necessary to overcome the problems caused by uncontrolled urbanisation. Laws associated with progress /Controlled urbanisation seen as a form of progress Beauty and creativity as a form of progress

ex :doc B

The urbanisation of a place not seen as a sign of modernity and progress (better transports, better housing) but as having negative impact on nature and humans. A person who lives in a countryside don’t want to see Buildings in his landscape.

The political power can change this.

ex : Doc A

To conclude, the power is everywhere. The emblematics forms of power are the authorities, the government, the politics because they choose, command or govern the population. The power is sometimes badly used and can cause inegalities in the world and separate the populations.
