SPACES AND EXCHANGES

The notion "Spaces and exchanges" deals with the geographical and symbolic areas that all societies occupy and the interactions between men and different societies. Our world is built on the exploration and conquest of new spaces. The different cultural, economic, sociological and language interactions have shaped and characterised our modern-day world. An exchange is when we give in return for something received - this can be anything from money, ideas, gifts, medical or financial

aid. Trade, emigration, wars and disasters have influenced the world as we know it today. Interactions

and exchanges across the borders have become easier and faster. Among the whole of the propositions offered by the notion "spaces and exchanges", I've chosen to speak about immigration, mainly in the

United States. What could drive people to leave their native land to go in the USA ?

First of all, nowadays more and more people want to emigrate in the United States. This phenomenon is called the American dream. Several reasons explain why they want to emigrate. In the United States, people have the ability to change their lifes for the better by climbing the social ladder. Indeed, some people from Mexico or other countries of Latin America want to leave poverty behind them because they desire to escape from war and political persecutions. Moreover, United

States is known for its mainly job opportunities. It is easier to get a better job than in immigrants'

native country and above all to have a better life than their parents. Some immigrants have started from the bottom and today they are successful business man for instance.

Nevertheless, not all the immigrants can live the American Dream. Those people have to be

determined and strong-willed because not only it is very hard to become successful but also because

it requires time and patience. So Immigrants have to be hardworking and especially open-minded in order to integrate society.

The United States have a lot to offer to new residents but them too/so do they. In fact, we can

clearly noticed that today, mexican food is present in every country or that the first language who is

talked in Miami for instance is Spanish. They bring with them a new culture and both country have a lot to exchange and to learn from each other.

We studied two documents who illustrate this idea : the amazing story of Fang who is from

Taiwan et who has come to the States to fulfill her dream as a dancer. She left her parents behind in

Taiwan. She desires Taiwenese dancers to have better opportunities in her home countries. On the otherside, we also studied the story of Farah who came from Iran. This women emigrated to find democracy and fortunatly, she came along with her family.

Another point that should be mentionned is the case of Fareed Zakaria, who still believed in the American dream. He was fascinated and even more, mesmerized by America. He tought that America was a shiny place whereas India was dull. He imagined people has fancy cars ans lived in dazzling cities. But when he arrived in America, he discovered that the middle-class was optimistic and full of contentment. He found out people were prosperous like the American Dream predicted
