I Am going to talk about the notion « spaces and exchanges » that i studied during this year in my english class. First of all i would like to give a definiton of it : This notion deals with the geographical and symbolic areas that all societies occupy and the interactions between men and different societies. We all have to know that our world is built on the exploration and conquest of new spaces. The different cultural, economic, sociological and language interactions have shaped and characterised our modern-day world.

So in order to illustrate this notion I have chosen to talk about immigration in the USA. Talking about immigration in the USA is particularly relevant regarding the topic of space and exchanges since immigration definitely involves the idea of space as immigrants are leaving their home land to get a new start in America. Thus, it also involves exchange bz immigrants come with their own share of cultural background that gets melt into a whole new lifestyle in their arrival country: the interaction between these two different ways of living defines multi-cultural exchange.

This recurring phenomenon raises the question of: “how have the different waves of immigration shaped the United States?”

First of all I’m going to talk about this nation that everyone adore and would like to visit. American history began with waves of immigrants, bringing their own cultures and traditions to a vast new country. With such a diverse population, some people compared the US culture to a salad bowl because with time those immigrants took a huge place on the American society. According to my document named “A snapshot of America”, it is said that immigrants accounted for 13 percent of the total 316 million US resident, and that adding the US born children of immigrants means that approximately 80 million people is either of the first or second generation of immigrants”. As we can see, the numbers are here to speak the truth, America is truly founded upon a lot of immigrants coming from all over the word mostly originate from Asia and Mexico. The second document that I have chosen is a map dealing the US FOREIGN BORN RESIDENT and it shows us that more than 12 millions Asians and 11 millions Mexicans are living in the USA as immigrants. So to sum up this part of my presentation, we can understand that America had been built upon immigrants through the years and that those waves of immigration may have enriched the American culture and enhanced our influence in the world.

On the other hand, Immigration is integral part of the American experiment. The usa is a nation of immigrants. Successive waves of immigrants have kept the country demographically young and have enriched his culture. To justify somehow what I just said, I chose to talk about a document that we saw in class, it is a listening untitled “typical American fashion”. Iconic American designers like Calvin Klein, Donna Karan and Ralph Lauren share one thing in common: they had Jewish immigrant parents who came to the U.S. and worked as sewers and tailors in New York’s garment industry. Klein, Karan and Lauren have helped define what American fashion looks like and they follow a lineage of immigrants who have been building that identity for more than a century. So we can see that Jewish immigrants defined a new way of freedom and American dress that took part in the late 19th and early 20th century. Morever,
