The group is also known to defend the medical and recreational use of cannabis in the United States

Cypress Hill has worked with artists from various universes including hip-hop and trip hop, R & B, neo soul, reggae, ragga, dancehall, reggaeton, rock, heavy metal, hardcore, fusion, hip-house , drum and bass, jungle, electro, latin music or dubstep.

Training and beginnings (1986-1990)

Cypress Hill was formed in 1986 in Los Angeles, California by the Latin rappers Sen Dog (born Senen Reyes on November 20, 1965), Mellow Man Ace, Muggs (born Lawrence Muggerud on January 28, 1968) and B-Real 2 June 1970). Senen and Ulpiano Sergio Reyes are two brothers from South Gate. In 1971, their family immigrated from Cuba to the United States. In 1988, the two brothers teamed up with Muggerud and Freese to form a hip-hop band called DVX (Devastating Vocal Excellence). The group quickly loses Mellow Man Ace, who wants to pursue a solo career, and changes his name to Cypress Hill5. The name Cypress Hill is inspired by a street in which the members once lived, the Cypress Avenue in South Gate, Los Angeles. In the early days, the group played mainly in front of the Los Angeles public and recorded demos of songs like Phuncky Feel One and Trigga Happy Nigga4.

They signed in 1991 to the label Ruffhouse Records of Philadelphia, distributed by Columbia Records3. If the majority of the albums have as their support for the voices of the instrumental pieces mixed on platinum, the live, from Skull and Bones (published in 2000), are clearly more fusion oriented with the almost systematic presence of guitar, bass, of samples. They also made a lot of duos with big rock bands such as Biohazard, Rage Against the Machine, Deftones (B-Real featuring on the hip-hop track Black Moon appearing on the album B-Sides and Rarities as well as on the soundtrack of Judgment Night with Sonic Youth and Pearl Jam, but also with other rap groups like Psycho Realm with B-Real or Delinquent Habits with Sen Dog, not to mention House of Pain and Beastie Boys, Dr. Dre etc. .)

First albums and successes (1991-1997)

The band's first album, Cypress Hill, was released on August 13, 1991. The main single is called Phuncky Feel One, but it's B's face, How Trigga Happy Nigga, formerly Trigga Happy Nigga, is of interest to local radio stations . Thanks to the support of singles and other songs like the bilingual Latin Lingo and the song X Tres equis, the album sells for two million copies [ref. necessary]. Meanwhile, DJ Muggs produced the first of House of Pain and then worked with the Beastie Boys and Funkdoobiest. In 1992, Cypress Hill reached 35th place on the 2007 Billboard.
