PPC- Anglais Places and forms of power

Intro:    I am going to present the notion of Places and forms of power.

To begin, it seems important to me to define what is the notion of places and forms of power.

The terms of the notion return at the idea of being able to as/have the influence of a person or a group of people on others. This power can be political as example but it can also be cultural or economic.

Consequently I chose to present the history of South Africa to illustrate this notion and we are going to ask the question: How people from different culture can live together in harmony?

First, we are going to study the establishment of apartheid in South Africa, then the abolition of apartheid, and to finish the birth of the democracy: the rainbow nation.

I- The establishment of apartheid in south Africa

I will start with the establishment of apartheid in South Africa.

We studied in class an image of the dark years of apartheid which is a racist regime that was based on segregation and white minority rule. We have learned that the police tried to break down a demonstration in a very violent way against the black’s population.

We also studied an oral comprehension about “apartheid in 90 seconds”, we discovered that the apartheid began in 1948 and the non-white couldn’t vote and were considered as aliens in their own country. In a word, they didn’t have any rights and they weren’t considered as citizens. To finish, the establishment of apartheid separated black African from the white minority and  Established very strict rules. It was a black period which began or the rebellions will be intensified. Finally, in 1948, apartheid became entrenched, a way of life protected by laws, enforced by practice and, as resistance grew.

II- Abolition of apartheid

Moreover, I’m going to speak about the abolition of apartheid.

Indeed, we learnt the resistance grew more and more with violences. The population was mobilized and wanted to find their freedom in a country of equality. The Sharpeville massacre in 21 march 1960 was a turning point for the history of South Africa. With the oral comprehension we learned that 69 black didn’t survive as police opened fire shooting protesters. The starting point was a peaceful protest against the passbooks that controlled every movement of non white people. It was a turning point because it enabled the world to be aware of the real situation in South Africa and condemn such a racist regime. After gradual reform and resistance and thanks to the ANC Nelson Mandela was finally set free in 1990.  After his release, Mandela’s mission to give freedom to all South Africa, black and white. It’s to abolish Apartheid and to put every people on the same equal footing. In fact, it’s to change the country in a free country with equality.  Finally, Sharpeville became a place of power where Mandela signed the new constitution.

III- The birth of the rainbow nation

To finish, I’m going to speak about the birth
