Space and Exanges

INTRO

        Talk about deal between different part of the world

                                     between men and diferents societies

        This year to illustrate this notion we studied immigration at different periods from all over the word towards America

        We may wonder if the usa is a multicultural country ?

        I/ The different waves of immigration were integrated in the USA in the past

        II/ We’ll see in what way the immigrants aren’t accept anymore nowaday

        III/ Why the immigrant were integrate in the past in the USA

SEVERAL WAVES OF IMMIGRATION

  • « immigration waves in Elis Island »

1st waves (1607-1790) : British merchants and settlers/ Pilgrim father / puritans ( religion + slaves)

2nd waves (1800-1880) : new people came / irish, german, scandinavians = the WASP (ruling class)

3rd waves (1880-1924) : Elis Island period / Lot of people form all over the world

  • « where the diffrent immigrant waves settled down in the making of the USA »

 

Immigrants had their places of preference according to their country of origin :

  • Europeans -> Midwest of USA
  • Italians -> Industrial cities of the north
  • Hispanics and asian -> Pacific coast

         We can imagine in 2050 : latinos will be the biggest group in california and in florida

We just have seen when and where the immigrants settled down in the USA. We may wonder if they were accepted in the USA in the past.

ACCEPTED IN THE PAST

        All were accepted at the begining

        During Elis Island period, the WASP felt threatened by the new comers

        Quota laws were created = laws which limited the number of immigrants from each country execpt the WASP

        5000 immigrants/ a day at the peak period of E.I ( many were sent back home)

        Ellis Ilsand closed in 1954

Shows, the immigrants were relieved to see the Satue Of Liberty because it was a symbol of independence that welcomed them

Hope a higher standar of living

Accepted because they built the country, they were useful for the USA

  • « The american land » a Bruce Springteen’s song

Pay tribute to the immigrants who built the country with their sweat

Integrated america = land of opportunity with lot of wealth

  • « New colossus » by Emma Lazarus

Shows that wherever they come from/ whatever their origin, statue welcomes the immigrants

Statue of Liberty is presented as a benevolent lady who helps immigrants
