According to the World Health Organization, tobacco is one of the leading causes of death in the world but also the leading preventable cause of death. Every year, smoking kills 5.7 million people. It is the only product legally on sale that causes death.

There is evidence that tobacco products contain and emit many harmful substances and known carcinogens that are dangerous to human health after combustion. The main effects in adults are an increase of about 25% in the risk of ischemic heart disease and lung cancer. In children, exposure to tobacco smoke increases the risk of sudden infant death, respiratory infections, ear infections and asthma

It is well known that half of all regular smokers today, about 1 billion people, will eventually die from smoking. It is equally alarming to note that hundreds of thousands of people who have never smoked before die each year from diseases caused by inhaling second-hand smoke.

Smoking also involves the health of those around you, the people you meet every day, at work, at home and in public places. Half of smokers who smoke more than 15 cigarettes a day die of a tobacco-related disease and thousands of passive smokers die from it every year.

Compared to a non-smoker, a smoker's cancer risk is multiplied by:

* 10 for the lung

* 7 for the pharynx

* 4 for the mouth and esophagus

* 2 for the bladder.

Smoking results in an average decrease in life of:

* 2 to 3 years for 10 cigarettes per day

* 5 to 7 years for 20 cigarettes a day

* 8 to 10 years for 40 cigarettes a day
