BTS C1 - 2021 ENGLISH TEST

1/ Introduce, develop and conclude on the following text.

This document is a press article, written by Fiona Harvey, dated Wednseday 17, March, issued by The Guardians, named « Government to announce £1bn fund to help reduce emissions ».

The first paragraph specifies what was announced under the article; the British government is planning more than £ 1 billion in a global stimulus package, mainly devoted to a project of sustainable development, both ecological and economically. Indeed, faced with the explosion of the pandemic and an economic recession not seen since World War II, leading to a stock market crash in March 2020, the States have revived the financial and economic machine. Except that in the case of the United Kingdom, this revival has focused on a rebalancing of available resources towards the goal of ecological and economic transition, which we will discuss shortly after.

In the second paragraph, Kwasi Kwarteng, Secretary of State in charge of affairs specifies the contours of this revival dynamic. In fact, in its dialogue, we understand the United Kingdom's determination to position itself as the main leader contributing "to climate change", to the point of claiming to have an efficient solution bringing together the economic, economic and societal issues of such a transition.

Then follows the second part of the article where it is specified how this transition is carried out, more precisely how are the funds allocated to this transition redistributed?

This model of a recovery plan is first of all justified by the awareness of such an impact that the Covid-19 was on the world stage, upsetting some of the fundamentals and economic predictions before the pandemic. This global turning point has highlighted a future where it is already a question of considering that in the future, humanity will be confronted with other phenomena of pandemics and the emergence of new viruses. Although it is impossible to categorize all the factors that made this new virus appear, the consequence of human pollution on the entire ecosystem of our planet has favored this scenario, so that the British government understands the need to operate for radical change, placing the climate crisis as "the UK's top international priority".

Finally, in concrete terms, this recovery plan is being implemented, for example, by allocating £ 171 million to an “industrial carbon decarbonisation fund on sites in Merseyside, Teesside, Humber and Wales, and offshore engineering work in Scotland. The government has said the strategy will create around 80,000 jobs over the next 30 years with the goal of reducing industry emissions by two-thirds over the next 15 years.

In conclusion, the United Kingdom is finding concrete solutions to the ecological challenges of tomorrow. Although on the international scene they are not the only ones to show their interest in a complete overhaul of the environmental economics system, just like in the United States with the will of Joe Biden, current president of the United States to return in Cop 21 following the decision of former President Donald Trump to want to withdraw from these issues, showing once again that international cohesion is not yet finalized on this future transition, although the advent of Covid-19 will surely motivate more than one nation to take the train of change.

2/ Answer the following questions using your specific knowledge and your own opinion.

- Min 50 words per question - Organise your ideas + use examples

a/ How does advertising influence consumers?

To influence the consumer, advertising is based on a set of marketing method and approach.

Marketing communication is the set of means used by the company to reach consumers, most concretely through the use of advertising spots, inevitably initiating a process that involves a sender (the company) and a receiver (the consumer). . To ensure this transmission, there are 3 main objectives in the art of communicating to encourage consumption:

 • Cognitive: through brand awareness, awareness of the existence of the product and knowledge of the product.

 • Affective: via product and brand appeal, effect on image and product and brand preference

 • Conative: via conviction (intention to buy) and purchase.

The creation of this influence is based on the copy-strategy: a synthetic document which summarizes what the message must communicate around 3 questions:

- What is the retained consumer benefit? What promise?

- What media can be put forward to support consumer benefit?

- What tone should the message have?

The copy-strategy is based on 4 elements: • The promise • The benefit • The proof • The tone

Two communication channels are mainly used; mediated communication bringing together television, the written press, cinema, radio and others and non-media communication such as point-of-sale promotion, merchandising, fairs and exhibitions, sponsorship and direct marketing.

b/ How can new technology make our lives easier?

The world today is evolving through technologies that humans have invented and advanced over thousands of years. The speed at which technology has advanced has made life almost indistinguishable from what it was barely a century ago. We are very dependent on the technology at our disposal, so that real opportunities were created thanks to the advent of innumerable technological developments, so that the examples are endless and those in the fields, at all levels of life. This addiction mainly refers to the many technologies that we probably take for granted and that have proven more than once to save lives and make our present life possible without ourselves, sometimes without even realizing it.
