The minimum school leaving age

The education reform is one of the most discussed topics all around the world. We have seen the transformation of school system multiple times from ancient to modern society. One of the recent debates in this field is about the regulation of the school leaving age. The opinions are divided. Opponents show the complete disadvantage of raising the leaving age but who is favour defend the benefits of this change.

« The mass absenteeism » is the term used in the article of Louise Tickle[1] that describes the decision of unsatisfied teachers to quite their job. The example of Spain shows that the dramatic change of the class dynamic raised the number of unsatisfied professors. Disbalanced classes between A- level students and those who would have rather missed the classes if they had a choice, make schools less attractive place to receive the proper education.

On the other hand, we can see various advantages. Upon the research lead by Tanya Wilson[2], the raise of compulsory school leaving age decreased the number of pregnant young women under 20. Longer children stay at school, less they have free time for sexual activities that makes the combat against the early pregnancy more efficient. Another reason why people might support this new regulation is its positive impact on the social and economic life of unemployed youngsters under 18.

Whether we agree or not the raise of the compulsory studies, one thing is clear that this is a complicated issue which demands the attention of the leading political forces and the civil society.
