I’m going to present you the school uniform in England with two questions : how the uniform appeared in England ? And what are the advantages and disadvantages of this one ?

Beginning with a little history of the school uniform. School uniforms in England had become quite common in the 16th century. Some schools had uniforms called “blue coats”, as they consisted of long trench-coat dyed blue. Blue was the cheapest available dye and encouraged humility amongst the schoolchildren. The first school to introduce this uniform was Christ’s Hospital and it’s the oldest uniform of any school.

In 1870, the Elementary Education Act made elementary education available for all children in England and Wales. The popularity of uniforms increased, and eventually most schools had a uniform.

Walking in the streets of the capital, taking a coffee or even visiting a museum, it’s hard to miss out on those students in uniform who are so famous for English schools.

Indeed, it’s a fact : 98% of English public secondary schools impose the wearing of the uniform. A practice general, that is found in children from 4 to 16 years. Nevertheless, it appears less common in primary schools, with only 79% of schools requiring uniforms and strict regulations on make-up or accessories.

Next, we will go to talk about the advantages and disadvantages of school uniform. First, one of the main advantages of school uniforms is the reality that every student looks to the same. Students who don’t have enough means to buy expensive and fashionable clothes can surely benefit from this. Another advantage of wearing school uniform is they can feel proud because of the feeling that they belong to a certain school. Moreover, wearing school uniform is also important for them to save time changing clothes or outfits because they are trying to figure out the right combination of shirt, pants, blouse or skirt. This makes it easy for them to save time because they just need to wear their uniform when going to school. And, finally, they don’t have to compete with their classmates because everyone wears the same thing. This is very common especially for high school and college students.

For the disadvantages, we can say for children who like fashion, wearing school uniform suppresses their way to express themselves. Some students are also not comfortable with uniforms as they cannot just pick them from their closet. Usually, it will require to iron them, so that children will not go to school wearing crumpled uniform. This will require some of their time just to prepare their uniform for the next day.

Another disadvantage of school uniform is that they are unable to show their personality through their clothing. They are not able to demonstrate their sense of fashion or style.

In conclusion, wearing school uniform is the requirement of any school that they should not object. Even if they don’t like it, they must always follow the regulations of their school.

I have a question for you : would you like to wear the uniform or not ? And why ?
