Synthèse «Lieux et forme de pouvoir»

I am going to talk about the notion of locations and forms of power.

Firstly I would like to give a definition of that notion; the power is a source of social, personal and political integration. He can be exerted by justice, the Medias like television and radios, political authorities but also by a country such as for example India, studied in class.

We will study the following problematic: What are the inequalities in India?

For answer this question we will use several documents: “The dowry tradition“, “50 million missing“ and “another girl“.

Firstly, India is a pays rich in conflicts because he is divided into four unequal hereditary social castes, it’s a system of castes. According to the caste system, the Brahmin is at the top of the cast system and it is the priestly class. Bellow the Brahmins, they are the Kshatriyas, the ruling class composed of kings and princes and then they are the Vaishyas, the business class composed of peasants and farmers. These three classes together exercise most power in the India. And at the end, they are Sudras, they have a job which consists in serving the three castes above them.

At the bottom of the scale are the Dalits, the untouchables. They represent one hundred and sixty six people and over 40 percent survive on less than 2 dollars a day. They still face discrimination even if today she is illegal. When somebody born into a caste, he could not change her caste but he can change jobs.

Then, we will talk also inequalities among men and women. Society is dominated by men, women is excluded of political and familial decisions. Only two thirds of girls aged between six and seventeen are enrolled in school against three thirds for boys. Most girls are married before fifteen years and they undergo physical violence as domestic disputes, sexual or disputes concerning the dowry. Yet in recent decades, women's status in India has improved considerably. More and more Indian women enter the local or national politics, and since 2007, the country is even directed by a woman, Pratibha Patil, the first woman to hold this position since the creation of the Republic of India in 1950.

In Another girl, the father is disappointed and worried by the birth of a daughter, he say they cannot keep this child and does not want to see her, while the mother wants to keep her, insured find a solution. A lot of girls are killed at their for a “dowry deaths”: women killed because their dowries inadequate for a wedding. It is best to have a boy because when he marries the family receives money, a dowry and parents can transmit their family name to the next generation.

For conclude, the power is exercised by men over women and "upper castes" on excluded.
