I’m going to deal with the notion of spaces and exchanges. First of all I would like to give a definition of the notion. An exchange is the act of giving or receiving something in return for something else and also with the places (or « spaces ») where these exchanges take place. In today’s modern-day world these exchanges can take several forms: people, trade or media. The concept «Spaces and Exchanges» illustrates the theme of the discovery of new space so it implies the discovery of new territories, the major waves of immigration, the fact of transgressing the frontier and finally the travel which involves the search of new experiences. Some people choose to migrate, to enhance their career opportunities and others are forced to migrate to war or famine.

What is the impact of spaces and exchanges on populations? / How Spaces and exchanges as a notion are embodied in those two articles?

I have chosen to talk about the immigration of Hispanic population to USA with documents which deals with the subject of Becoming American and the impact of black Friday on Americans traditions using the anonymous picture entitled “The new American tradition” studied in class.

The first document, entitled “Rosa vs. Evelyn” written by Sonia Manzano, in 2014 talks about the immigration of a Puerto Rican family in USA. They own a bodega (l.8 and 10) where everybody speaks about Puerto Rico (l.12) and watch Puerto Rican TV (l.13).l.20”.We can notice that in the cover of the novel the word “Evolution” is written in red, suggesting a revolution to make  changes. They live in Spanish Harlem and in this scene there is a conflict between Evelyn her mom “beggy, slave “l.3 because Evelyn doesn’t work in the Bodega for all the summer. Smelled like bacalo”l-11-13. And pops her stepfather who doesn’t agree with the way Evelyn is educated and lives he calls her a “shameless spoiler kid” l.23. Becoming American is difficult because not everybody agrees with this change. It means leaving behind one’s culture and it involves other people. For example, Evelyn wants to feel more American by changing her name but her parents are against this idea. Despite the obstacles, immigrants manage to reach this new identity by adapting to their new culture and by standing up for their convictions. The second text, written by Cristina Henriquez, is an extension of the previous one. It exposes another type of conflict for immigrants: how to manage relations with people who stayed in their origin’s country ? The scene takes places in the USA within a Panamanian family home. The narrator is the son of a Panamanian man who hasn’t gone back to his native country. He received an invitation from his old high school president, and decided to call him to confirm his attendance. The class president is very sarcastic and he makes fun of the father, while the father called with a good intention. The class presidents disrespects him with offenses like “We’ll roll out the red carpet, then” l.20. He imagines that the father is contemptuous because he live in the USA. The father doesn’t understand at first, but then he gets infuriated. He feels the disdain of his former classmate and, misunderstood. The father seems to realize that he doesn’t belong to his own country anymore when he sight “They think we’re Americans now. And maybe we are! Maybe we don’t belong there anymore after all.”
