I will talk about the notion places and forms of power. Power can be defined as the ability or official capacity to exercise control like the one used by a state, a government, a political organization: it can also be a strength or force exerted or capable of being exerted; it can finally be a person, a group, or nation having great influence or control over others.

I am going to talk about the theme of causes fought in protest songs. It is an interesting illustration of the notion because protest songs are used in many types of causes and useful to fought against or for them.

To illustrate this notion, I will try to answer the question: How did protest songs impact their time and how are they still alive nowadays? My plan is made up of three main parts: the first part is about the Vietnam war, the second one about the Irish case and the third one about protest songs nowadays.

First, the Vietnam war sparked a large wave of protest in the country, because of footages of dead Vietnamese soldiers and civilians, the high mortality rate of deployed US soldiers who were misunderstood because of the use of chemicals like the napalm that killed many innocent Vietnamese or the refusal to support the South Vietnamese government that is corrupt is undemocratic. American singers protested against these situations and helped support pacifism and the withdrawal of American troops in Vietnam through their anti-war songs. For example, Bob Dylan, in Blowin’ in the Wind released in 1963, strands for the value of life, peace and freedom in the context of tension in Vietnam. He fights for human rights. There is also Unknown Soldiers, released in 1968 by The Doors, which was written in reaction to the Vietnam war. It denounces the image that war is becoming banal everyday life as is depicted with the unknown soldier being shot while the American family sits for breakfast and watches television and the many deaths caused by the war. These songs helped impacting their time by raising awareness of the bad aspects of the war to stop it by targeting the government, politicians and civilians who were misinformed and had a bad attitude because of the propaganda led by the government.

Then, the IRA killed a lot of people to fight against the British presence in Northern Ireland. In 1993, a terrorist attack killed two young boys after a bomb explosion. After this attack, the Cranberries released in 1994 the song Zombie.   It denounces the terrorist attack as well as the silence of the government and population. They criticize children being caught in the cross fire and people who do not feel concerned by the situation. They say that the Irish people as a whole is not part of the conflict: not everyone in Ireland agrees with this conflict. The civil war impacts families: mothers will loose sons and violence will increase. The song is addressed to the Irish people; both those who fight and those who do nothing. It is addressed to the “zombies”. It’s effective because it has a political aspect. The strong imagery also made the song effective. But this situation has not changed a lot. In 2018 Bad Wolves released a music also called Zombie, with almost the same lyrics: ”guns” became “drones” and “since 2018” became “in 2018” It shows that conflicts didn’t stop and in fact escalated with the evolution of weapons. Both versions of Zombie have impacted their time by highlighting the indifference of people in front of atrocious situations like the murders of children.
