I am going to talk about the notion “myths and heroes”. First I will explain what I understand by “myths and heroes”. In my opinion, heroes can be legendary characters or normal people whose courage makes them accomplish outstanding achievements. In the history some people have also demonstrated exceptional bravery; which allows them to be considered as heroes today. To illustrate this notion I will try to answer the question: “Who are the heroes nowadays and what impacts do they have in our life? My presentation is made up of three main parts. I would like to concentrate on the heroes of the nine eleven and then the unknown heroes and finally I’ll take a look at the heroic acts of some celebrities.

First of all, we saw in class a document about the heroes of September 11. Indeed during the attacks of 11 September 2001 in New York many people became heroes. Indeed, some people through their work have saved many lives. For example, firefighters saved people in danger in the towers or helped stop the fire, doctors and nurses also saved people by caring for the wounded during the attack. The police also helped many people that day. All these people have become heroes this day since they shown courage to help, take care of people and saved life. They didn’t hesitate to risk their life to save people. It can therefore be said that during tragedy, some people show courage and perform heroic acts.

Otherwise, some people perform heroic deeds without being forced to do so by their profession. Indeed we saw in class a document about the Thalys heroes. In August 2015, on a train from Amsterdam to Paris, an armed man ready to fire on the passengers of the train was mastered by three Americans. Indeed, as the terrorist entered their wagon, three American tourists, Spencer Stone, Alek Skarlatos and Anthony Sadler on holiday in Europe foiled an attack. When they saw an armed man get into the wagon the three men threw themselves on the terrorist in order to disarm him, which they managed to do. The three Americans have become the heroes today not only for the passengers of the train but also for the whole world. Their bravery which these men have proven to have even been shown to the whole world since a film about their heroic act was shot. Their coolness and heroism was even rewarded by Barack Obama and they also received the Legion of Honor by the French president.

Finally, some people become known after performing a heroic act like the three Americans but some already known people perform heroic acts. This is the case of the actress Emma Watson which we listened to a speech in class that delivers during the Heforshe campaign. Indeed, in this speech Emma Watson engages and advocates for equality between men and women. She wants men to become involved in the feminist cause and women and men to be equal in the field of work and society. In making this speech, Emma Watson is courageous in defending her ideas and a cause dear to her heart. She does not risk her life like the heroes seen before, but she fights for a better world which is a different but equally important heroic act.

To summarize, we can say that heroes are not necessarily people capable of physical feats but also people who fight for a better world or people who do not hesitate to risk their lives to help others. The characteristics common to heroes are courage and willingness to help others. The world needs
