IDEA OF PROGRESS

The idea of progress can be defined as an improvement, a development or a change – a technical, scientific or social advance which contributes to making the world a better place.

Earth being overpopulated, thus ensuring more needs and global warming, our current aim is to deal properly with those issues. Anticipating tomorrow's challenges means Progress has to be done; it’s why in nowadays important technical, scientific and social advance are made, from organic agriculture to integrated pest management, in order to make the world a better place to live in the future.

In what ways ecological progress would make modern-day life better?

I’ll answer to the question thanks to extracts studied in class : Green Gotham's text, Nairobi farms and a personal research on Wein.

With seven billion mouths to feed, human agriculture needs to be effective and most importantly eco-friendly in order to avoid, to erase, mistakes of the past.

Green Gotham, a American town, has particularly developed urban farming, which offers fresh and local food. But how does it improve urban dwellers'life ?

By growing what they need near their house, they decrease the food miles, which ensures pollution with long distance transportation. Urban farming reduces harmful runoff, ends plastic packaging, brings jobs, helps people reconnect with proper food and the Earth.

Rooftop and patio gardens create peaceful places for relaxation that can attract tourists, -another economical benefit.

However, because land in cities is rare and expensive, because of rising rents, boosters envision vertical farming. Vertical farming would allow tremendous production in a little space within a short walk from home. Urban farming is an ecological & social revolution which will really improve life quality in all points : from fresh, local food to job offers & economical benefit.

Urban farms are also cropping in Nairobi, Kenya, where one third of the population lives in urban area.

The Project was started by an Italian NGO, coopi, which teaches community groups how to grow vegetable farms in the slums. They provide the sack, soil and a system so people grow the local spinach even out of the side of the sack. Sixty seedlings can fit there! Thanks to this system, inhabitants really have more food, -good quality food- with micro nutrients, but they also gather and take their affairs into their own hands and organize their own development.

Now even kids are being taught urban farming at school. Everyone’s getting evolved, even some who’ve never been working the earth before. The farms can make a big difference : one base feeds more than 150 families and it brings the community together.

So this progress is even more benefical for the poor. It helps them getting out of there misery, by there own.

Now, I'd like to talk about Vienna, Austria's capitol.

Vienna is the worldwilde leader in terms of quality of life, but also in infrastructure & innovation. Vienna secures & improves its ecological & economical & social performance everyday. In fact, Vienna
