Myths and heroes

Hi! Today I’m going to talk about the notion "Myths and heroes". To begin, I would like to give a quick definition of the notion. A myth is a popular believe on which social values are often based. While a hero can be someone who is admired for his courage, outstanding achievements, or noble qualities. They can be regarded as an ideal or role model.

In order to illustrate this notion I will speak about sport champions. What influence do sport s champions have on today society?

Nowadays, sport has an important place in the society: it gather, it entertain us, it keep us healthy but more of all it inspire. How not to be impress by a random person (like me or you) reaching the highest spheres of society ? These champions come that far because of hours and hours of training. They need to be hard workers, exigent, motivated end mentally strong.

The true heroes are the ones who are heroic away from their respective sports, the ones who sacrifice their time, money, and sometimes even personal well-being for the betterment of others, those are the ones who are actually worthy of our admiration.

For exemple, Tommy Smith sacrificed his career because of his convictions. When he won a JO gold medals in Mexico, he raise his right fist on a podium. He wanted to denounce the violences agains the black community and especially the police violence. After that act of courage, he couldn’t enter any competition again and was fired from the army. He said about his act  “my silent gesture was designed to speak volumes”. He is a hero because today, his act is one of the symboles of the fight for racial equality and mouvements like “black lives matters”.

But of course, some other athletes didn't take the path of glory without losing some wings. Some have made bad choices for their health but also the image of the sport itself. I chose to illustrate that with the case of the fallen champion Lance Amstrong.

Lance Amstrong is an American cycling champion. He won the Tour de France seven times. He was caught cheating by taking performance enhancing drugs. Many sports fan idolized him, they felt betrayed when they discovered he had used drugs. Armstrong isn't a hero anymore because he doesn’t fit in the idea we have of “a good person”. That shows that some athletes are ready to do anything to be admired and called heroes, and they don't even feel bad about it. It also show how much sport can have a bad influence on some fellow.

Sport, above physical capacities, require an enormous mental to resist to the addiction of the victory. Hopefully, many had know who to use the spot light given to fight for noble causes. Sports heroes inspired you to be the better version of yourself.

To my mind, sport in representative of the society. Sport industry is a melting pot of different cultures and social status. They’re people who are weak and are tented to do bad things and they’re good persons who want to do great things for the world. We, the “random” person have to know that sportif aren’t gods but humains, they can fail. We have to keep the good to inspire us but also keep in mind the bas things. A wise man has said “smart learn from their mistakes but a smarter learn from mistakes of others”.
