Abstract

Since the beginning of the invention of light bulbs, men have been looking for a way to perfect this invention(efficiency and brightness). There actually exists a link that plays the biggest role of the outcome of the light bulb which is the link between electrical energy, heat content/energy, light and work. The goal of this lab was to determine the quantitative relationship between electric energy, heat and light. In my opinion the outcome of this relationship ultimately depends on what type of material was used to contain the water and the bulb, the type(specifications) of bulb that was used, if the visible light was contained by a substance(India ink) and the what amount of electrical energy that was being conducted to the light bulb.

Introduction

In this laboratory, I needed to determine the quantitative relationship between electric energy, heat and also light. I believe that this relationship will mostly depend on the specifications of the light bulb(its rate of heat depending on the light production) and also on the environment that the light bulb is in(use of calorimeter or not).

Materials and Methods

To perform this laboratory, I needed to use the following apparatus: a calorimeter, a 12V light bulb, a DC power supply, a weight scale, a thermometer, India ink, a stopwatch, a voltmeter and an ammeter. To begin the lab, I measured and then wrote down the room temperature. Then, I weighed and recorded the mass of the EEH Jar with its lid on it. After this, I filled the EEH jar to the indicated line with cold water. To proceed, I added ten drops of the India ink into the jar full of water(Or just enough so that filament of the lamp is slightly visible once it’s turned on). Then, I connected the power supply to the designated terminals of the jar with the use of banana plug connectors. For the next step, I hooked up a voltmeter and an ammeter as shown in Figure 1.1 of the lab manual(To be able to measure the values of the current and the voltage that’s going into the lamp). Beforehand, I adjusted the power supply to about 11.5V(And not exceeding 13V).To proceed, I positioned the EEH jar into the styrofoam calorimeter. Once it was correctly positioned, I inserted the thermometer through the hole that’s at the top of the Jar. Then, I stirred the water gently and observed the temperature. Once the temperature warmed up to about 6 to 8 degrees below the recorded room temperature, I turned on the power supply. After this, I recorded the values of the current and the voltage and then throughout the rest of this experiment, I kept an eye on these values. Once the temperature reached a state that it was far above the room temperature, I turned off the power and took note of the time. Once the temperature peaked and started to drop, I wrote down the value of this peak. Lastly I recorded the weight of the EEH jar with water. For the second experiment, I repeated the same steps as for the first part, however in this part I didn’t use the India ink and the styrofoam calorimeter(the data recorded in the first part was also recorded in the second experiment).
