Today, I am going to talk about e-sport, which refers to the competitions on videogames and how it is perceive by people.

I will talk about two graphs, the first one represents represents the e-sport audience growth from 2015 to 2020. The 2nd one helps to understand how e-sport is considered by people of different ages.

According to the first graph, e-sport audience knew a spectacular growth over the years. Indeed, in 5 years the number of viewers nearly tripled for occasional viewers and for e-sport enthusiasts. If we add both, it went from approximately 200M in 2015 viewers to 600M viewers in 2020. E-sport is particularly famous in Asia where it started to make a breakthrough with games like league of legends but international competitions such as world cups are now watched by millions of viewers around the world.

What can explain this huge development of e-sport?

over the years, people’s vision of e-sport has radically changed. In the past, it was seen has a mean to earn money by playing videogames and videogames were not very popular. Indeed, the graph shows that e-sport is more popular in the eyes of young adults (37%) than it is in the eyes of older ones (17%). It may be because the videogames industry knew a huge development during the last decade. Young adults, who grew up during the development of videogames are more disposed to understand the time needed to train when you are a pro player like for real sport and that can explain the fact that they more consider it as a sport (37%) than other adults (18%). And actually, there are a lot of similarities between sport and e-sport like the training to become better, the work on the mindset to resist pressure.

The growth of the audience is also due to the development of the online competition and of the broadcasting platforms (Twitch, YouTube) whereas in the past competitions just gathered people who played and it didn’t have the same aura in the yes of the mainstream.

To conclude, e-sport knew a huge development and people’s vision has radically changed: it is now considered by many has a sport.
