Myths and Heroes

“How have romantic ideas and scientific experiments given birth to Gothic literature and movies ?”

Step 1 : Some famous characters from literature have become myths - and are part of the collective culture of a nation. Then, some myths travel in time and space - for example, Gothic literature, which was born in England and then developed worldwide.

Gothic is an art - architecture movement in the Middle Ages, associated with churches, castles and cathedrals..

Step 2 : The main characters of Gothic fiction include villains, vampires, werewolves, monsters, ghosts, skeletons and the Devil..

To give you an example, I’ll tell you a scary story :

After a long trip, a man went to a hotel and the woman at the front desk told him not to look inside the room next to his under any circumstances.

He was intrigued and the next night, he looked through the keyhole and saw a very white woman sitting in a corner of the room and he felt cold air the chilled his eye.

The next day, he looked again and could only see something red. He though that the people in the room didn’t want him to look and had put something red to block the view. He asked the receptionist and she told him that a long time ago, a woman was murdered by her husband in this room and now, her ghost haunts it. These people were not ordinary, there were white all over exept there eyes which were red.

So the red thing the man had seen through the keyhole was the ghost’s eye stairing at him.

Step 3 : Now, i’m going to talk about gothic fiction Dracula.

Dracula is an 1897 Gothic horror novel by Irish author Bram Stoker.

The novel tells the story of count Dracula’s move from Transylvania to England in search of new fresh blood.

Then disasters occur in the streets of London until the vampire is finally killed. The novel touches on many important themes, like the role of women in Victorian culture, sexual conventions, immigration and colonialism.

Step 4 : The movement of Gothic fiction is also marked by the publication of the famous Mary Shelley's Frankenstein in 1818, a pivotal novel deeply rooted in the Gothic tradition and considered as one of the first science fiction novels.

Step 5 : For me, a scary story should be as close to reality as possible or else contain realistic elements. The supernatural events such are both close and yet very far from reality time. In other words, a scary story must be based on realistic facts to keep away the reader to a supernatural and scary world ..
