MYTHS AND HEROES

>

>

> INTRODUCTION

>

> The notion that I'm going to present now is the notion of “Myths and Heroes”.

>

> During the year, we saw that the type of myths and heroes that a society chooses tells us a lot about its culture.

>

> And what we discovered was the importance of the American dream and of religion in America.

>

> EXAMPLES:

>

> To illustrate this notion and this idea I have chosen three examples:

>

> First, my first example is MARTIN LUTHER KING, one of the greatest heroes of America. And what makes him so special is that he was born with many handicaps: he was black, he was born in the racist South and in 1929, the year of the Wall Street crash and the beginning of the Great Depression. But thanks to education and religion (his mother was a schoolteacher and he became a pastor like his father and grandfather), he became one of the greatest civil rights leader with his own holiday (Martin Luther King Day) and the youngest Nobel peace prize in the world (at 35) even if he was killed later.

And even if he confessed, he is still a fallen hero because he cheated and lied for so many years.

>

> And finally, my third example is BILL CLINTON, one of the most popular presidents of America. He also had a difficult start as he lost his father even before he was born and he came from a very small town in a very poor state (Arkansas) but thanks to education, he became one of the most popular presidents. But then he cheated on his wife and lied about it so he lost his reputation and became a fallen hero. But he confessed and apologized and so he became popular again.

> CONCLUSION:

>

> So we have three different examples of American heroes which show, as we said, the importance of the American dream and also of religion and morality in America. That is even if you're poor, you can become a hero and even if you fall, you can redeem yourself if you apologize, even if for Lance Armstrong, it might be difficult ...
