The Alsatians who had remained home, the “reconquered brothers” were allowed by those who called them by that hypocritical name to feel the weight of their brotherly affection. We were the vanquish : they took pain(?) to let us feel it. First a horde impossible innumerable had shaggy haired, rawboned beings – wearing green clothes and boots with holes in them – fell on the conquered country. Their swarming masses brought to mind the first Barbarian of yesteryear. They kept coming again and again : red-haired ones, blond tow-headed ones, fat ones, skinny ones, Badeners, Bavarians, but mainly gross and bawling Prussians. Almost all of them carried their all furniture in a napkin, they were the finest of the lords of the earth ; they came to put in place a new system and to represent the new civilization in the “Imperial territory”. Prussians came from very far, from the North and the East, and today we still speak in Alsace of their extraordinary rig-outs, of the groups of children who ran up to you with starry eyes (…) starring widely when you shown them some white bread - they said it was cake – or bunches of grapes which was a marvel unknown to them. Our new masters then asked themselves what they could do to make Alsatians loved them : they decided to use against us special laws, constant humiliation, iniquitous constraints. We saw a lot of them, laws, police ordinances; some were cruel others petty and stupid but all were unfair
