In the world, the press is considered as the fourth power. It can be very powerful. It can be used to protest against something. It also can be used to inform the people who don't have access to any other type of information, for instance the internet. Should there be limits to the freedom of the press? In the first place we will look at the fact that the press can be used against dictatorship. And then we will see how far the press can go about private life and how it should have limits.

Firstly the press can be used to denounce the dictatorship, as The Other Side of Truth of Beverly Naidoo published in 2000. Where Mr. Solaja, a journalist denounces a dictatorship which takes place in his country, Nigeria. More precisely the reign of the despot General Abacha who is waging a campaign of suppression against journalists.

Or again in the letter of Ken Saro Wiwa which he has wrote in prison, shortly before his execution (he had been sentenced to death) where he accused the British government to help the dictatorships.

Even when he’s sentenced to death he keeps on his fighting for his convictions .Even if this is very dangerous, these men continue to defend the freedom of the press.

Of course, there should not be any limits to denounce a dictatorship or a person or group wanting to stop the freedom of press. But when it is about private life or respect, there should always be limits.

For exemple, the tabloids which put in the first page private picture of famous people. Which could bother the famous people in these picture. But it wouldn’t bother only them, anybody with a picture of himself printed on a tabloid without knowing or even agreeing with the fact that it is printed wouldn’t appreciate that.

Or the disrespect of family’s mourning, when some English and American press published a picture of the death police man who was killed after the terrorist attack against to the newspaper Charlie Hebdo.

This is why there should be limits but only for the private life or just for respect. Otherwise there shouldn't be any limits, this is why it is the freedom of press, so we can express the freedom by using the press. We can also denounce bad actions that happen around the world and spread it.
