Mini exposé sur Frankenstein LLCE

The author : Mary Shelly was a famous British writer, novelist, dramaturge, essayist of the 18th century. Her best-selling novel was Frankenstein or the modern Prometheus published on January 1, 1818. Mary Shelly wrote it when she was only 19 years old. During a trip to Italy, she started writing her gothic novel during a game between friends. The aim was to write a very scary story.

The main plot : Frankenstein or the modern Prometheus is an epistolary novel consisting of 4 letters that tell the story of Robert Walton who during a trip to the North Pole, meets Victor Frankenstein, whom he saves during a snowstorm. Following this incident, Frankestein puts his trust in Walton and decides to tell him his story. Victor is a student from Ingolstadt, a university where he studied chemistry and science. One evening, he created a monstrous creature from limbs taken from various corpses. Out of fear and disgust, he decided to abandon his creation. Unfortunately, the monster is deeply resentful of him for having abandoned him and left him alone. The monster therefore seeks revenge.

(Therefore, it decides to attack the entourage of its creator. Later, the two meet in the mountains and the creature asks Victor to create a woman for him to fill his loneliness. In exchange, he would stop killing people and live apart from the population. At first, the scientist accepted his proposal but eventually he refused for fear that his new creation would also become a killer. Then during Victor's wedding, the monster killed his wife. So Frankenstein set off in pursuit of his horrible creature, which took him to the Pole where he eventually died.)

To what extent it is gothic : Frankenstein is considered a Gothic novel because of the presence of evil, mystery, secret and the supernatural associated with the Gothic genre. The author uses the supernatural elements of the resurrection of the dead. The story takes place in a dark setting more precisely in a castle. Finally, she uses supernatural beings.

Why it was successful : As soon as it was published, her book was a huge success. The success of this masterpiece rests on the foundations of the previous Gothic novels. Provoking horror and terror, Mary Shelley's novel is pragmatic, to the point where its Gothic becomes almost realistic what the public likes.
