SPACES AND EXCHANGES

Intro

First of all, I'm going to ralk about the notions spaces and exchanges. To begin with, I'd like to give a definition of this notion. It deals with the geographical and symbolic areas that all society occupied and the interactions between men and different societies. Our world is builton the exploration and conquest of new spaces. The different cultural, economic, sociological and language interactions have shaped and characterized our modern world. Among the wall of the prepositions offered by the notion spaces and exchanges. In order to illustrate this notion, I have chosen to talk about the immigration in USA that is very important. Indeed, when the first english settlers reached the new world, over 40 millions people have migrated to the united states. All americans are immigrants or sons of immigrants. The exception is probably the native americans. But some anthropologists believe that the native americans themselves were immigrants from another continent. What could drive people to leave their native land to create a new country : America.

Firstly, we will look at the history and the causes of immigration where we will talk about the motivations of people to emigrate to the USA, there were difficulties of integration and we will see the vision of immigrants of the USA compared with the vision of their native country. The first document is a picture of a cartoon « welcome to Amercia » for 1880 drawn by S.Keppler. This cartoon reflects the welcome extended to immigrants of the 1880' and the concept of America as a land refuge.

Immigration started in 1492. The first wave of emigration took place in the 16th century. The country of origins of emigrants was Spain and they settled down Florida, Mexico and the Carribean. The second wave of emigration took place in the 17th century. And the countries of origin wereEngland, France, Germany, Nederland and Africa. It's not said in the document were they settled. The African immigrants came as captive on slave ships.

America is a multiethnic and multicultural contry. As ilustrated in cartoons, the sign on the left of Uncle Sam, the allegorical figure of USA, reads « free education, free land, free speak, free ballot, free lunch ». The sign near the center of the image reads : « no oppressing taxes, no expensive king, no compulsary military service, no knouts or dungeons ».

Their problem were in ireland, the potaoes famine, in germany the political upheacals, in scandinavia, land shortages, in central europe the antesemitism and in western europe massive unemployment due to industrial revolution, as shows the scene to the left of Uncle Sam.

America is the ideal country for immigrants, it brings work, some security and a guarantee for the education of children we can talk about american dream. Secondly, the document is a picture from 1903, the little italy quartier in New York, we can see shops, streets venders, markets with many people. It is a very noisy area and quite poor. Once on the mainland, after a difficult journey, emigrants must immediatly find a place to sleep and work to nourishment of their family.
