  • How compatible is the freedom of the press with celebrities’ right to privacy ?
  • Freedom of the press is an essential right for the actual society. Freedom of the media is the freedom of communication and expression. Press is a source of entertainment and information for people around the world. They want to know what’s going on around the world. Some prefer gossips medias. This is where freedom of the press and right to privacy meet.

  • « Right to privacy » and many other rights are stated in the Universal Declaration Of Human Right in 1948. As the freedom of the press, « right to privacy » is an essential right in our society.

In recent years, there have been only few attempts to clearly and precisely define a « right to privacy ». I think that its definition is that we could have the choice to share things with people or your friends or family but we also have to keep things for us. It could be feeling, our body, thoughts or our identity.

  • As exemple, celebrities are human like all of us but they’re very exposed to the medias due to their choice of life. Some celebrities’ choice is to appear often in the medias or in commercials. They share their lifes in the social networks like Facebook, Twitter or Instagram. Some celebrities do the opposite choice and prefer to keep their life for themselves.
  • This is the reason why it is often claimed that their right to privacy is violated when information about their private lives is reported in the press. The point of view of the « gossip » medias is that the general public have a right to know personal information about those with status as a public figure. This reason shows that freedom of press and « right to privacy » isn’t very compatible.

As far as I’m concerned, I think that  it could have a compliance between the freedom of press and the celebrities’ « right to privacy » if the person accepts to share his life or his feelings with the press but it couldn’t have a compliance if the person doesn’t accept to share his life with the medias.
