Ecotourism... what does it mean? Let’s start off by defining the notion. Ecotourism is considered as a more responsible way to travel, discover natural territories, that preserves the environment, is eco friendly, and maintains the well-being of locals.

It can also be defined as tourism of exotic, endangered environments usually to support conservation efforts and research developments.

The ecosystems of these places have little to no interaction with human society, providing scientists with valuable biological information and tourists with breathtaking experiences. However, some critics consider ecotourism to be unethical and more detrimental than regular tourism.

We can then ask ourselves: do the advantages of ecotourism overtake on its inconveniences?

First of all, it’s proved that Ecotourism provides an impactful firsthand experience about a sustainable lifestyle, as well as making people more aware of the components of an ecosystem, in order to be careful when it comes to protecting nature and different kind of species. In fact, this new way of travelling has gained a lot of popularity in the last few years due to its noticeable advantages: such as increasing environmental awareness by putting into work the idea of a natural resource management. Moreover, it helps keeping traditional practices alive and relevant by promoting locally grown food and crafted goods. Which automatically increases the economy by returning nearly 95% of the trip’s revenue back to local communities instead of 20% when spending money on international fields.

But on the other hand, it is still indeniable that regardless on how you travel, the growing number of tourists is enough to put a strain on the freedom of cultural expression.
