It is undeniable that the world is getting richer over time, that is a fact. Man is now able to become richer, and then to enjoy his wealth, in pleasant and luxurious comfort. It is undeniable, the quality, the standard of living of the rich is increasing and improving. This is called progress. I am not against progress, on the contrary, progress is a promise towards a better future. But neither can it be denied, it must not be denied, people live, sometimes survive in total misery, with hunger in their stomachs but also fear of an uncertain future. With fear, anxiety, concern about this uncertain future in mind. How can one feed and house a family, or even one's own person, without a penny? How to clothe oneself and allow the education of one's children when one is in need? How to live decently and properly in poverty? I am asking you and, quite honestly, I do not believe that "decent and correct life" is combined with "misery and poverty". But alas, it is also a fact, a sad fact, that too many people, far too many people live in this misery and in these worries on a daily basis. And this has been going on for too long, far too long. There are still many injustices that I could denounce, but I will rather promote unity in the world, unity by religions, unity by origins, unity by social classes, unity by colours, unity by genders, and many other units that I have not mentioned, and for this, you Africans as well as we the peoples of the whole world, we must move forward together hand in hand and be for the progress of all and not only the progress of some at the expense of others who will be neglected. I therefore invite you, the African people and the peoples of the whole world, to share and to put into effect the words spoken in this speech, because if everyone gives the best of themselves, it is in a better world that we will live. That will be all for me: thank you for listening to me, O people of South Africa.
