The notion I’m going to deal with is Spaces and Exchanges, first things first ; I’d like to define the notion.

A space is an area that societies occupy and where exchange occurs. An exchange is an act of giving and receiving something else in return, it can also be viewed as a continuous movement of circulation.

There are different kinds of exchanges, media, people and trade. To illustrate the notion I have chosen to talk about the Mexican immigration in the USA using several documents:

A cover magazine called the Business Week, Joe Heller’s cartoons on Mexican immigration and finally Kal’s cartoon entitled Uncle Sam.

We may wonder: is this immigration is a blessing or a curse?

Over the last decade The US-Mexico border has been a burning and debated issue, it’s one of the longest borders in the world and also one of the busiest, as matter of fact it has become a strategic place for legal and illegal business, not only commercially speaking, it’s also a nerve center for drug dealing. The border is a magnate for Mexican immigrants who dream of a better life in the USA. Currently the jobs are limited in Mexico and the life standards are much lower than in the USA. Contrary to Mexico which is struck by unemployment and poverty, the USA appears to be a land of opportunities as far as the job market is concerned, that’s why many destitute Mexicans cross the border whether legally or illegally this is the case of the cover magazine entitled embracing illegals which focuses on the opportunities offered to the Mexicans in the USA. While they move to America for better prospects, they’re often offered menial and painful jobs and accept low wages. That is the paradox of the situation of Mexican immigrants very well illustrated by Joe Heller’s cartoon on Mexican immigration where he denounces the American racism towards the Mexican immigrants through the title given to the document “I can tell by the color of your skin you’re not from around here, are you?” , they represent more than half the immigrants in the USA, and while there are some Americans who aim at liming their numbers, others see them as a cheap labor force, as a result immigration is a highly controversial issue. On the other hand , part of the American economy seems to be based on this unskilled work force, ready to endure the difficult working conditions in restaurants or as farm laborers. To answer those who are convinced that undocumented immigrants are taking away jobs from the American citizens, pro-immigrants insist on the painfulness of these jobs convinced that American workers would not accept to work in such conditions, in this case Kal’s cartoon Uncle Sam clearly shows the situation of how essential are the Mexican immigrants to the USA economy. In any case this migration patterns is the basis of all kinds of exchanges. As already said, it enables economic exchanges. While Mexicans are given the opportunity to improve their living conditions, the US economy benefits from their adaptability. Besides immigration tends to create a multicultural society with the emergence of TV channels in Spanish for example. Another illustration of these exchanges is Spanglish, it shows the influence of Spanish over English. Currently is only a matter of linguistics, it has also become a commercial strategy to target the Latino community in the states.
