Places and forms of power :

I'm going to present the notion of places and forms of power. First of all, I think it's important to define this notion. "Places" could be important buildings or institutions that represent a certain form of power, for example Buckingham Palace – a symbol of the British monarchy. A place can also be a country or a state -  for example the USA is a state which is powerful enough to influence events throughout the world. The power  is the ability to control others, events, or resources; the ability to make things happen despite obstacles, resistance, or opposition. This of course leads to conflict between those who have power and those who don’t. I choose to speak about the power of medias. Medias are the symbol of the freedom of expression but the utilization of their power isn't always used in the good way.

We are nowadays surrounded by medias such as newspapers, tv, radio, or Internet. It is the media that helps the population to get information about a lot of things and also to form opinions and make judgments by watching various issues! It is the media which keeps the people updated and informed about what is happening around them and the world.

For the first time in 70s in the USA media took possession of the 4th power and use it to inform the population of the true.Watergate is one of the most massive government conspiracy and one of the biggest political scandals. Elected president of the United States in 1968 and new candidate for the Republican party in 1972, Richard Nixon made illegal wiretapping at the headquarters of the Democratic Party  during the election campaign.   Everything starts with the arrest on the night of 17 June 1972 five burglars who broke into the Watergate building in Washington where there is  the democrate's headquarters. The FBI investigation does not go far that is why at  the beginning the case does not make much noise.  However, two journalists from the Washington Post, helped by a mysterious informant known as Deep Throat, publish many revelations, especially the links  between burglars and the president. Nevertheless nixon is reelected in November 1972. But thanks to the obstination of a judge, and the establishment of a Senate inquiry,Nixon is accused of obstruction of justice and abuse of power. The American public is more interested in the case with the TV broadcast of Senate hearings on Watergate. When the existence of a monitoring system in the White House is made public Nixon resigns.
Here medias help the justice and by acting as a counterpower they become the 4
th power, and the population is now trusting them to denounce what it is hidden from them.

However it's because we are surrouned by medias that we are really influenced by them. And medias can't be always trust. In deed, this power could be used as a weapon of propanganda or manipulation. In fact it's really easy for the media to show to the population what they want and thus to manipulate them.

I choose to speak about the gulf war because during this war medias didn't do their jobs well. First I think it's  better if I resume a bit this war. So the leader  Iraqui Saddam Hussein order the invasion and occupation of Kuwait in August 1990. Alarmed by these actions, Arab powers such as Saudi Arabia and Egypt call on the United States and other Western nations to intervene.A Kuwaiti teenager, reports to the Security Council of the UN and shows a massacre of babies torn from their incubators. The scene widely broadcast by the U.S. and international media will cause strong reactions worldwide. In the USA, the opinion rises to accelerate  the intervention in Kuwait and a few days later, led by the USA UN decided to send a military force in Kuwait.
