MARS ONE PROJECT

Introduction :

I will present the notion of "Spaces and exchanges" which deals with the geographical and symbolic areas that all societies occupy and the interactions between men and different societies. Our world is built on the exploration and conquest of new spaces. So, through the sequence about Mars One, seen at school, which is a mission to send humans to Mars, I will answer the following problem : Will this mission give birth to a real exchange for humans ? In a first part we will see the positive points of this mission, and in a second part, we will see the negatives points.

1|  First part : Mars One mission a new way to communicate

Being able to establish humans on another planet seems to be an extraordinary hope for the survival of humanity. It means that we won’t be anymore at the mercy of the climate change, disappearance of natural resources, excessive pollution, nuclear accidents,… This project is also very interesting to increase the knowledge of the human adaptability and for the search of new resources that will allow to create new technologies. At least, living on Mars will allow to explore and study in greater depth the planet and to discover possible signs of life, and perhaps other forms of life, which is also very interesting.

2|  Second part of negative aspects: Mars One mission : a one way communication

But, according to the article of Peter Walker written on march 2015, as the astrophycist Joseph Roche points it out, Mars One project will certainly run into major problems : very high cost, difficulties to convey all the necessary infrastructure and, above all, some unknown but essential factors : the psychological risk for the candidates subject to all the difficulties of this inhospitable place (radiations, failure of the magnetic field, cold, remoteness,…). Finally, if this community manage to settle life on Mars, will they still be humans ? Their body will have to adapt, their  way of life will change, and their mind too… And how can we imagine the future with humans divided in two communities ? Won’t it be one planet for rich people and Earth for those who don’t have enough money…

Conclusion :

On the one hand, this mission will be a great progress for the world because it will discover a planet with new things that we do not know yet, allowing the progression of our knowledge in science and improve our life. But on the other hand, this mission is very dangerous for humans life and very expensive. So this mission can advance humanity but with its risks and perils.
