Key question: “What are the typical caracters and features of gothic ?”

Intro : Gothic as a literary movement appeared in England in the 18th century. The starting point was the aesthetic value granted in the medieval relics. They reminded low, dark and mysterious ages and places (castles, abbeys...). Many authors have been inspired by these times and they created the new type of gothic literature. Imagination leant on fantastic, terror, dark places, spectre, damsel in distress, mad scientists who challenge the laws of nature.

The thematic is: The World of Imagination, and the key question is “What are the typical characteristics of Gothic?” First, we’ll see the different characters and features of the Gothic, then well’ see that every Gothic novel denounce an human or societal fault and finally. To do so

we are going to study a painting of this motherfucker of Dorian Grey.

Characters → faites une phrase de transition entre les 2 parties

In gothic literature, the characters are obviously a source of terror: villains, disquieting scientists, mad men or women. Supernatural events or characters add to the feeling of anxiety one experiences: ghosts, monsters, demons and evil creatures.

In the « The Castle of Otranto », there several types of characters like Manfred who follows Isabella « […] Manfred, advancing again to seize the princess ». She is the Damsell in distress in this story, she is vulnerable at the beginning, she is braver in the end « […] she knew even Manfred's violence would not dare to profane the sacredness of the place; and she determined ». Side issue, Manfred is a tyranical man. Manfred and Isabella are confronted with a supernatural event, the ghost of Isabella’s stepbrother «  She shrieked, believing it the ghost of her betrothed Conrad ».

The characters in Ghotic literature often face a feeling of loss. Several emotions are there : terror, the feeling of nostalgia and mourning.

In the extract of Frankenstein, Victor Frankenstein is giving life to his creature. This is a mad scientist, he has spent two years working on his experiment « I had worked hard for nearly two years, for the sole purpose of infusing life into an animate body. » But when he discovers his living creature, he is overwhelmed by fear, disguted at the creature's physical apparance so he abandons his creature instead of taking care of him as a father would do «  Unable to endure the aspect of the being I had created, I rushed out of the room, and continued a long time traversing my bedchamber, unable to compose my mind to sleep. ». There's also a feeling of mourning « I thought that I held the corpse of my dead mother in my arms ; a shroud enveloped her form, and I saw the grave-worms crawling in the folds of flannel. ».

Indeed, the monster of Frankestein is ugly and scary because of the Creature's description « His yellow skin scarcely covered the work of muscle and arteries beneath ; his hair was of lustrous black, and flowing ; his teeth of pearly whiteness ; but there luxuriances only of the same colour as the dun-white sockets in which they were set, his shrivelled complexion and straight black lips. ». → vous pourriez parler du point de vue, nous n’avons que celui du Docteur F. The poor creature is left alone and must feel lost, abundended «  His jaws opened, and he muttered some inarticulate sounds while a grin wrinkled his cheeks ».
