The idea of progress consists in believing that the world can become better in terms of quality of life. Over the centuries women have fought for gender equality to improve their living conditions.

How have determined women helped society evolve towards gender equality ?

Family :

Over the years women have fought to change mentalities and to change the way society thought of women.  Women were considered to be housewives and had to obey their husbands. They looked after the children, cooked and did not work. They had no rights.

Women started speaking up against male domination in the 19th century in Great Britain

Politics :

The Suffragette movement .  ( expliquez ce mouvement/ leur combat/ comment elles ont combattu/ la réaction du gouvernement/ de la police/ gain de cause )

In 1918 women were allowed to vote.

Work :

Women during WW2 : women doing men’s job.

They wanted equal salary.

Made in Dagenham film based on a true story

A strike was led by Rose Boland, Eileen Pullen, Vera Sime, Gwen Davis, and Sheila Douglass, it began on 7 June 1968. These sewing machinists were responsible for the car seats at Ford Motor’s company. They decided to go on strike because they discovered that they were paid 15% less than men. Without the car seats, cars could not be produced. Rapidly, the effects of the strike were seen, as car production ceased within the first week.  The factory was forced to come to a complete standstill, eventually costing the company over $8 million. Still, Ford refused to negotiate with the women

The strike lasted 3 weeks .

The Ford sewing machinists strike of 1968 was a trigger cause of the passing of the Equal Pay Act 1970.

Education :

Women also fought for girls’ education. It’s only through education that women will become    mens’ equals

Girls’ right to education in the world.

Gender equality as a global cause : feminists promoting it ( example Malala )

CCL :

To conclude women's roles have evolved. They are no longer housewives, they have the right to vote, to go to University and to work and be equally paid as men but there are still pay discrepancies , for example Patricia Arquette denounced the fact that actors and actresses are not equally paid. In some countries women’s conditions are still difficult.

Heroes

Over the centuries important women have fought for gender equality to improve women’s living conditions. They can be considered heroes as they were willing to give their lives to improve the living conditions of women . They were dedicated to this cause.

Impact : women could vote in 1918

The seven women (Rose Boland, Eileen Pullen, Vera Sime, Gwen Davis, and Sheila Douglass) who led the strike. They were determined, showed strength.
