Strategy for oral comprehension

You must understand the document as a whole

Before listening

You look at the source and you anticipate. You think about what vocabulary you might hear.

For the first viewing you must look at the number of people talking, their role and the order in which they speak. Is there music or sound-might this help you.

Note taking

You must take notes. You decide how you want to take them

If there are a lot of speakers you might want to make columns:

If there are a lot of dates, you can create a timeline.  If there are several subjects you can create a mind map.

Write in English, you can translate later.

Spot

A.the words which are repeated or stressed

B.the dates, the figures and the proper name

C. the time marker and the linking words

Then you proceed to write your recap. Your notes should give you a guiding line or thread.

You must think of the 5 ‘W”

Who, When, Where, What, Why and How

Recap in English and in French

Number of paragraphs :At least 3 but better with 4

Structure- What is needed : Linking words, such as First of all, Next, Moreover, Indeed, To conclude

Introduction- Identification of context linking word

Nature-Type of document What type of oral documents : a (news)report, a talk show a film extract, a documentary an animated movie, an advert, a commercial, a blogger’s video a TV series-show,speech, interview
