Essay: Decision – making process in management

  1. Question 1 : Define the decision-making process by presenting 2 different perspectives - 2 points (400 words) – refer to research papers for theoretical support.

To make an thoughtful decision, one must have all the information about each of the alternatives and know the consequences that each one of them could generate in relation to the defined objectives. By using the data collected as raw material, a correct treatment of the information makes it possible to better discern the action that should be applied and its the purpose of the making process decision. There are 7 step in this method. I will introduce you this 7 step really briefly:

1. Identify a problem or opportunity: recognize the problem

2. Gather information: what information should I take to take the best solution?

3. Analyse the situation: which are the possible solution for reach my purpose?

4. Develop options: Draw on your information and emotions to imagine what it would be like if you carried out each of the alternatives to the end.

5. Evaluate alternatives: which alternative can I keep for reach my goal?

6. Select a preferred alternative: which alternative seems be the best among all good alternative that I chose previously?

7. Act on the decision: take your decision and put it in place.

many large companies use this method; it has already proven itself ...

  1. Using STAR, list 2 scenarios in which a company used or it is likely to use this managerial approach and which strategies they used and why? – 2 points (400 words)

The STAR technique can be used for example in a company like Apple to know what kind of feature must have or not the Apple device.

For example, when the iPhone 7 came out, there was no Jack plug. They then had to take a moment to think about the situation and determined another alternative to the entrance of a jack each. According to, the option to pull the jack was the best solution because they knew that the apple addict forgives them all and will continue to buy their products as well as they can. Changing the jack allows them to sell other Apple products such as the Apple wireless headset and thus increase their turnover. This proved true because their turnover increased.

I can also talk about the case of Volkswagen for the famous story of the gas emission.

They wanted to play a game of poker by trafficking their cars (various techniques to fraudulently reduce the pollutant emissions of some of its diesel and gasoline engines during certification tests) in order to gain competitiveness and reduce manufacturing shots to reach a maximum profit. they thought they were never going to be caught by the law and that was the best solution. But it turns out that it was probably not the best solution because they had to pay their debt and go to court.

  1. Reflect on the career consequences of using this management strategy compared to another one – 2 points (500 words).

I think that using this technique, it brings us a lot of advantage. This makes it possible to set up any type of plan in a constructed way and perfectly thought out with a setback. This technique allows to know with what type of alternative I can work and what behaviour I must have towards the customer for example. Then we only need to make the most consistent decision according to the period, a solution may be the best at one time and less good at another date. It must be said "if I take this solution, what will it bring me compared to another?" And so it will allow us to, why not, achieve maximum efficiency. It is for these reasons that I think that STAR is beautiful is one of the best techniques, compared to others.
