Conclusions on Supply Chain Management

The long term success of a firm depends on the success of its suppliers and the satisfaction of its customers. That is, the entire supply chain must be successful. Poorly performing supply chains are easy to recognise and generally schedule product using forecasting, in a batch mode. These supply chains generally push the product through to the customer, have low overall reliability and maintain high inventory levels to achieve fulfilment levels i.e. meet orders. Overtime, expediting premium freight and inventory obsolescence drive up product costs. A growing number of firms are designing products and operating in an extended multi-company enterprise.

They are minimising non value-added work and reducing inventory levels across the supply chain. These organisations are also coordinating planning and forecasting in a multi-firm context and are managing a multi-tier supply environment. Many firms are eliminating costs rather than re-allocating them. An example of this effort is the outsourcing of the materials management function. They are implementing customer pull across multiple boundaries and also treating suppliers as partners rather than as adversaries. What is being experienced today is the fundamental change in global business philosophy of increasing partnership agreements.

In order to manage these supply chain arrangements for realising overall improvement in enterprise productivity, it is necessary to improve the planning and management of complex interrelated systems such as materials planning, inventory management, capacity planning logistics and production systems.
