Myths and heros

Paralympic athletes

Introduction:

The term "myths and heroes" deals with a mythological event that took place in the history of a country, and a historical, political, or everyday hero.

The Paralympic games were created in 1960, it takes place every 4 years, summer and winter. It only concerns people with disabilities, amateur or professional athletes.

For me, this theme is part of the concept myths and heroes since the participants of these games face their handicap, they practice a sport in competition, without judgment, nor discrimination. In our society it is a form of everyday heroism.

I will answer the question: Why are Paralympic athletes considered everyday heroes?

  1.  Presentation of Paralympic Games

  1. Objectives

The goal of the Paralympic Movement is to provide athletes with physical disabilities the opportunity to excel and achieve sports performances comparable to those of Olympic athletes.

Those who participate are physically or visually impaired athletes (amputees, blind, disabled drivers, cerebral or wheelchair users, or any other physical disability) as well as athletes with mental disabilities.

All handicaps are accepted, there is no discrimination or judgment in this sporting competition. The solidarity and the valorization of the athletes are always highlighted!

  1. Paralympic Games Regulations

During this competition, 23 sports are practiced divided into several disciplines.

They are classified according to the visual handicap, or the motor handicap. The rankings are different. In track and field, there are race events for the blind, for the visually impaired, for amputees who run with a prosthesis and for wheelchair races.

The key word of these games is equity. Each discipline is adapted according to the handicap.

On the other hand, the Deaf and Hard of Hearing still do not have the right to participate in the Paralympic Games since generally there is no physical handicap, which allows them to participate in the classic Olympic Games. The same problem arises for the mentally handicapped.

  1. Athletes with disabilities, sports heroes
  1. The fight against disability

The creation of these games advances the perspective of disability and allows individuals to look differently at this difference.

This fight lasts for years, the idea of creating this event offers a real advance on the acceptance of disability.

  1.  A form of heroism

The athletes participating in this competition are seen as everyday heroes, who have the courage to excel, and to give motivation to all people with disabilities.

The intense training of athletes shows that despite their differences, they can perform the same sports as the valid while assuming and being proud of their disability.

Thus the cohesion between disability and validity can weld the population and advance the tolerance of society through sport and team spirit.

  1. Conclusion

We can then conclude this notion by saying that Paralympic athletes are new heroes of everyday life, who change the perspective of disability on society, and who unconsciously change and change the way of thinking.

Their heroism and courage translate into the motivation to excel, to work their body and the spirit of competitiveness despite the disability that is part of their lives.
