Part 1/

1: There are three situations in wich Hélène needs to speak English :

– when she gives guided tours to American or British visitors.

– Outside of July or August, for visitors of several different nationalities because many tourist sites only offer tours in French or English.

– In July and August, when many different nationalities such as Russian, Japanese or Chinese tourists don't bring their own guide.

2: If she knows the site, Hélène doesn't have any research to do as such but she has to find out as much as possible about the group. She can then adapt her presentation to their level of interest.

If she's not familiar with the site, she prepare her presentation in many ways as she would in French. She collects as much information as she can, if possible in English. Then she puts it all into right order ans she tries to eliminate what is not important.

When she presents somewhere for the first time inEnglinsh, she even practises with her friends.

If she needs tu use new or technical words, she tries to find out how they should be pronounced. Also she asks a couple of teachers who are from England for help.

3: First at all, you thoroughly prepare your preparation.

Then make a written note but don't write out the whole presentation because someone who reads his notes looks and sounds unprofessional.

The English you use should be fairly simple and clear and your notes should be concise, just contain the informations you want to give the group, plus one or two key-expressions. Many people in groups are not native speakers of English.

Unless you are guiding a group of specialists, it' not necessary to learn huge lists of architectural or other vocabulary. Indeed, most of your group are not interested in technical details.

At least, it's important to learn the keywords and structures tu give a good general presentation.

Part 2/

1: Greed the group: Good morning everyone.

2: Introduce yourself: My name is Hélène and I'm your guide.

3: Say what you are going to show your group: This morning, we're going to visit the grounds and the interior of the château.

4: Ask people to do smoething (directing people): If you'd like to follow me, we can started our visit.

5: Attract people's attention to something: Overthere, you can see the ninetieth century landscape garden.

6: Indicate exactly where something is: If you look down ther by the river, juste next to the wall of the château, you casn see the remain of the fish tank.
