Hello, in this final task we are going to present cartoon number one and we are going to answer the following problem: "What woud it take to overcome these differences and build bridges." Passer la diapo

We will first analyze this cartoon published by Monte Woltervon a cartoonist and published on June 3, 2018.It shows a map of North America representing in the foreground a large wall encompassing all the American territory. In the middle of the United States we can see its 45th president, Donald Trump, this one is also caricatured. The United States has isolated itself from the outside world, especially from its neighbor, Mexico. The United States can be described as a prison.Passer la diapo

In the second part of this final task we will explain why the United States of America has built this wall. In 1916 there was an American-Mexican conflict, which caused the death of 6000 American soldiers. Passer la diapoAt the end of this conflict only stones were present to make the separation between Mexico and the United States... But a too great hunger of migrants coming from South America as Mexico and Honduras pushed the United States to restrict the access to their territory by starting the creation of an artificial border that is the wall because of the lack of natural borders as mountains or rivers. Following the creation of the wall, many Republican presidents succeeded George Washington and continued his project of creating the wall. Passer la diapoAfter the tragic events of September 11, 2001, a fear settled in the population "a growing insecurity", this fear reinforced even more the desire to protect itself from other countries. After the election of Donald Trump in 2019, the latter revived the project by injecting a lot of money in the construction of the new wall, many prototypes have also been presented. But Donald Trump is facing a big problem, this one being that the border between the United States and Mexico is 3000Km long.

Passer la diapoSo we will start the third part and explain the blockages that represent the difficulty to build this bridge. Since the attacks, the Americans have a great fear of foreigners. They think that Mexicans are all thieves, gangsters and criminals. This mindset prevents the two countries from getting along. As the North American population becomes more diverse, it is increasingly difficult to build relationships with a wide variety of people. But how do you develop such relationships with people who may be 30 years older, grown up on another continent with a different level of education?

Following this part, we will give possible solutions to implement to arrange a good understanding and renew links.

One of the first steps in building a new relationship is to recognize the differences that can become barriers between Americans and Mexicans. As Claire Raines and Lara Ewing say in their 2006 book, The Art of Connecting: "How to Overcome Differences, Build Rapport, and Communicate Effectively With Anyone," "we must build bridges across our differences to connect our similarities."

Passer la diapoMy friends and I came up with three possible solutions to implement, the first being to work in different work groups, by getting to know people outside their usual comfort zone, they will broaden their perspective and reduce their anxiety about people who are different.  Attend celebrations and festivals of various ethnic groups.  They will feel awkward and uncomfortable at first, engage in conversation with people they get to know and maybe better. Awkward relationships can evolve into meaningful friendships through the discovery of similarities and shared experiences.
