Power

Introduction:

I’m going to talk about the notion of power, its forms and its locations.

To begin with, i’d like to give a definition of this notion: it is the ability to influence people’s behaviour by applying authority towards individuals in order to get respect and order. Such power can create social groups like governments, companies, military and even criminal networks, when there is power there is counter power because of the conflicts that may be caused.

To illustrate the notion, i have chosen to speak about the access to power.

Thus we can raise the following question, what does it take to get political power and keep it? what are humans capable of in order to fulfil their political goals?

in a first part i will focus on what it takes to get power, the values it demands. And in a second part, it will explain how some individuals choose to act to keep power.

I-The access to power:

Power is the ability to make individuals do what we demand them to do. Humans have always wanted power, it gives us a level of superiority we all look for. Power is seen at different scales, political power is the best known thanks to the media coverage it gets, politicians all want to become presidents, governors etc. but the the path is full of problems and difficulties that take a lot of determination to overcome

For instance, let’s look at Frank Underwood, the main character of an american TV Show called House of cards that we studied in class. He believes that power is his destiny, with his wife Claire Underwood, they plot and make plans in order for him to achieve political greatness. At first he is Whip in Congress, then thanks to his political strategic mind and especially his dishonest tricks he manages to become VP to finally become president of The United States, Along the path, he had to do things that torment him, he killed two people, he ended a few carriers, he made threats, he robbed money but all this was for him to achieve his goals which was him becoming president.

He was ruthless, cunning and determined to become what he sat his mind to , he is pragmatic and willing to do whatever it takes to become president.

the same phenomenon applies to William Shakespeare’s 1606 tragedy Macbeth, where Macbeth and Lady Macbeth murder the king Duncan. Macbeth and his wife are willing to get power no matter what it takes. Even though the guilt took them by storm and made lady Macbeth commit suicide, they managed to get the power they wished for and which was promised by the witches. Macbeth had to murder the king and accuse the guards for it.

Both these famous characters were more than determined, they were set on getting power, they accessed power not because the people wanted it but because they wanted so much that they erased all the entities that might have beaten them on their way including human lives; they got through the human morals and actually made it.

II-Keeping power

human societies have all chosen a political that apply to the values of the individuals like the greek with the democratic system in which citizens vote directly or indirectly to choose among candidates the one who they think is the best to lead the territory.
