Notion of progress

Men are always looking for improvements. So today I’m going to talk about the notion of progress.

We can ask: What are the different forms of progress and how do they express themselves in everyday life?

Consequently, I’m gonna define the notion of progress and afterward I will present examples of application in daily life. And finally I give you my opinion about progress.

I- Define

So first, I define the notion of idea of progress.

The idea of progress can be defined as an improvement, a development or a change. A technical, scientific and social advance contributes to making the world a better place.

It's the idea that the world can become increasingly better in terms of science, technology, modernization, liberty, democracy and quality of life.

They are many forms of progress:

- Social progress which is equivalent to the impact of advances on society. For example quality of life, right of people, freedom, democracy...

- Scientific and technological progress: it's the idea that sciences and new technologies enable to resolve some problems. Scientific progress relates more to medicine and biology whereas technological progress is new technologies to slow down climate change, to advances in communication and automated

II- Different form of progress

In order to illustrate this notion, I have chosen three documents that we studied in class.

First of all, there is :

- Social progress

To speak about this kind of progress I have chosen to use the documents about modern India studied at school. I remember that document we studied this year shows that many aspect have changed in India. Indeed, for example family’s living conditions have improved because now people have time to relax themselves (dancing…). Moreover, the mentalities evolutions and globalization have result the development of the occidental way of life (vetement, image fille sur une moto). The women situation have changed to because they go to school and a woman (Pratibha patil) become in 2007 the first female president in India. The country has also developed now there are a lot of buildings symbolizing progress.

Secondly, there is:

- Scientific and Technological progress

In the technological and scientific sector I have chosen to use the documents about designer baby and smart machines that we studied showing the technological and scientific progress. For example in the text “Brave new world” by Aldous HUXLEY show that actually scientist can produce many clones with only one embryo (by the bokanovsky’s Process). Scientist have also developed “designer baby”. Designer baby is a baby whose genes have been chosen by its parents and doctors so that it has particular characteristics (sometimes to help a family member by organ donation). Furthermore, technology was developed to. For example in some TV games, competitors play against computer or other example in video games players are against a computer to.
