Enregistrez un compte rendu structuré en anglais sur « Dépôt des devoirs », composé d’une introduction, d’un résumé des idées essentielles et d’une conclusion (2 minutes 30 à 3 minutes).

This document is an article that was written by Simon Usborne while he worked for the newspaper The Guardian and published by them july 18th 2018. It is talking about how and why Penzance, in 2017, received the status of Britain's first ever plastic free town from the movement know as Surfers against Sewage.

The citizens of this town started to try and stop using single-use plastic all together mainly thanks to Rachel Yates, a woman who decided to do something about it after she saw the aftermath of a storm during a beach cleaning event organized by the SAS. She made it her personal mission to achieve plastic-free satus for Penzance according to the guidelines the SAS has been using. The last episode of  Blue Planet 2 , The BBc documentary series , where we could see albatross parents feeding plastic to their chicks, also helped popularize the movement .

The plan had five major points in no particular order ;urging local government to change its behaviour and support the campaign; encouraging businesses to ditch single-use plastic; working with schools and youth groups; arranging events including plastic pickups; and creating a steering group to continue to grow the mission.

To start, she helped buisneses organize both to negotiate a better deal for biodegradable products so that they did not have to up the price too much ; and to change the minds of some of the customers, who were reportedly slitghtly against the idea. In cafés they banned plastic straw and made all takeway packaging biodegradable, in other stores, they made edible packaging out of corn starch ,some re-use plastic tubs...

In conclusion, Penzance became the first ever plastic-free town of Britain because multiple inhabitants were conviced that overuse of plastic had a lot of downsides and was something that could be rectified by working together, changing the thoughts of others and presuading the government that it could be done.

  1. A few towns have received the plastic-free logo so far. They are all located on a coast. Do you think they are more concerned about plastic waste consequences than other towns? Why? (1’)

I think they are indeed more concerned by the consequences of plastic waste . Because of their placement, the waste will accumulate on there beaches wich will impaxt both their touristic prospects and the health of the animals that happen to live there.

That of course is going to create an even bigger scandal and the elected officials woud rather not be remembered as the person that mase their town look bas on national television

  1.  Do you think consumers care about knowing whether or not a product contains plastic? Could it become a selling point? (1’30)

I think some people care about it and some don't. As long as the advertising isn't something like  if you don' buy this you'r a monster then it might sell a lot.

Indeed, a number of people will just buy what is the cheapest but if they see someting that is not extremely pricy with a sticker on it that says its plastic free. they'll take it in order to say thy've done their part in saving the animals by stopping climate change.
