The idea of pogress : limits of progress

Today I will talk to you about progress, by definition progress is a gradual improvement of something.

However, there are different types of progress, as medical progress, scientific progress, social advances, economic, political, technology…

But we see more and more people today rejecting progress, as with the Amish who have chosen to abandon modernity.

Mais l'on constate de nos jours de plus en plus de personnes qui rejette le progrès, comme avec les Amish qui on fait le choix d'abandonner la modernité.

So we can legitimately ask ourselves whether progress is necessarily positive. To respond we will look at several forms of progress, medical, and technological advances.

We will end up discussing the limits of progress.

On peut donc légitimement se poser la question si le progrès est forcément positif. Pour répondre nous nous intéresserons à plusieurs formes du progrès, les progrès médicaux, et technologiques.

Nous finirons par discuter des limites du progrès.

I-Médical progress :

 We studied the notion of progress in the scientific field, with genetic manipulation.

But what are the advantages and the disadvantages of scientific progress? For example do we really consider genetic manipulation to be progress?

The scientific progress allows improving life condition and keeping alive sufferers. The Scientifics find medical treatment witch slow down or cure diseases, however Scientifics dream to eradicate all illness possibility as soon as the embryo.

“A savior sibling” or “designer baby” is a child who is born to save a family member who is affected with a fatal disease. The child is conceived in through in-vitro fertilization and PGD “pre-implantation genetic diagnosis”. The child is destined to provide an organ or cell transplant in order to cure the illness. We studied a newspaper article drawn from USA Today published in October 2010; it talks about Molly Nash and her brother Adam Nash. Molly is affected with Fanconi Animia and she was saved by her brother Adam. Adam is the first designer baby, when he was born his blood from umbilical cord was transplanted to his sister.

This article shows the advantage of the scientific progress, in fact the medical benefits allow saving life.

Nous avons étudié la notion de progrès dans le domaine scientifique, avec manipulation génétique.

Mais quels sont les avantages et les inconvénients du progrès scientifique? Par exemple, considérons-nous vraiment que la manipulation génétique est un progrès?

Les progrès scientifiques permettent d'améliorer les conditions de vie et de maintenir en vie les malades. Les scientifiques trouvent un traitement médical qui ralentit ou guérit les maladies, mais les scientifiques rêvent d'éradiquer toute possibilité de maladie dès l'embryon.

«Un frère ou une sœur sauveur» ou «bébé créateur» est un enfant né pour sauver un membre de la famille atteint d'une maladie mortelle. L'enfant est conçu par fécondation in vitro et «diagnostic génétique préimplantatoire» du DPI. L'enfant est destiné à effectuer une greffe d'organe ou de cellule afin de guérir la maladie. Nous avons étudié un article de journal tiré de USA Today publié en octobre 2010; il parle de Molly Nash et de son frère Adam Nash. Molly est affectée par Fanconi Animia et elle a été sauvée par son frère Adam. Adam est le premier bébé designer, quand il est né, son sang du cordon ombilical a été transplanté à sa sœur.

Cet article montre l'avantage du progrès scientifique, en effet les bénéfices médicaux permettent de sauver des vies.

Some people object to the designer baby for moral reasons. On the one hand they‘re afraid that the children became a commercial production because with the genetic manipulation we could choose cosmetic characteristics in order create a human model of perfection. Of course the principal Scientifics’ interest is to cure genetics diseases, but we know the human can be able to do terrible thing like the atomic bomb or Nazism.
