SPACES AND EXCHANGES

Hello, today I'm going to tell you a little bit about space and exchanges.

To introduce this notion, we studied the question of immigration to the US and the American Dream.

Immigration is the action of coming to live permanently in a foreign country. The part of migrants in the world population is approximately 3,2%. So that represents a small parts of the world's population. America is a continent which has for a long time attracted migrants who wanting to reach “American Dream”.

But, can we still claim to reach the American dream?

For beginning, we have to know what are the founding myths of American society.

This founding myths are based on: freedom and the belief in hard work.

Why freedom? Because, in America, we can start from scratch. If you have nothing: no money, no car, you can still elevate yourself in American society. This is, the American Dream. In other words, it's the idea that people can get everything provided they are hard-working and virtuous.

The belief in hard work was inherited from the Puritan Settlers. They were very strict and work very hard and lived according to the Bible. So, in the US: everyone who works hard will become rich: a lot of money and material possession like large houses with beautiful garden. It's the reason why Americans don't fell bad when they have money because for them: everyone can be rich.

Some migrants manage to reach the American dream, like Kayla and Miguel!

Kayla is a young woman from Cuba. When she arrived in the US from the Caribbean, she realized that New York was not exactly as she thought. Her family and she settled in Brooklyn. She says that at first it was not easy for everyone in her family but finally, they have adjusted to American life. Today, she don't want to go back.

Miguel, he, he's from Mexico. When he arrived in United States, he wanted to go to college to graduate and find a good job. He was ambitious. Finally, he's working part-time in Starbucks coffee and he's studying in a prestigious university.

If Kayla and Miguel have achieved their American Dream, it's not always to easy. In reality, lot of migrants come to United States with dreams full of head and a big ambition but don't reach the American dream.

We can take the example of Mexican's migrants. A part of young Mexican cross every day the US-Mexico border to study in a American city: El Passo.. It's thanks to student visas awarded by the US government that they can do that. Lot of Mexican study and work in this American city.

In America, there are more than 11 million illegal migrants, without documents. In El Passo, they are approximately 10 thousand.

Obama would like to offer amnesty to Mexicans living for more than 5 years in the United States. But for some people and for some who belongs to a charity association, this idea seems dubious.

An immigrant says that: “it's only temporary” because when Obama will leave power, the next president can cancel this proposal. But the problem is that the government will know everything: where they are, since when... and then they can be deported.

For me, It's important to dream. We must think about our future and if it looks better in the United States: we must try. Working hard is for me the key to the success.
