To what extent child labour still exists
today in India?

Idea of progress

Child labour is a fact of life for a big percentage of children in India today. Despite the fact that a lot of children still don’t go to school the situation is however improving.

Improving

Child labour in India isn’t as bad as it used to be.

The government made a law to make free and compulsory education for all children between 6 and 14. Despite that, school remains expensive because of school books and the uniforms. That’s why 25 percent of places in schools are reserved for poor children.

To get a job, elementary education is a must for employment which stops a lot of child labour.

The government made education a fundamental right for children: even though children under 14 can work in their family business if their education isn’t being hampered. Otherwise children can work after school or during holidays.

Not improving

-50% of females can’t read.

-50% of children are victims of child labour

-Poor children still go to school

-There are still villages without schools because children work instead of going to school.

-Cost of books and uniforms.

-Poor families prefer sending their children to work to earn money rather than sending them to school.

-It’s part of their “social fabric”.

-Expensive to send all children to school, older ones have to work
